ROSEBURS NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURS, OREGON, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1 3, 1 947 THIRTEEN Winter Carrots, Beets Will Slash Living Expenses In many sections along the Pa cific Coast boots and carrots thrive as a fall vegetable crop. These varieties have ornamental as well as utilitarian value, their foliage being most attractive. Consequently they may be spot ted here and there throughout your garden. Also a row of car rots placed to act as a small hedge will prove a most interest ing gardening adventure. If pos sible, of course, all the seed should not be sown at once or the entire crop mav have to be har vested in a relatively short period of time. Beets and carrots both are quite rich in vitamins. Carrots are be lieved to aid in seeing at night. Although many orange-colored vegetables are assumed to have this quality nevertheless carrots rank first as an aid to better eye sight. Constant Moisture Needed . In many areas carrots may .be planted throughout every month of the year. A sandy loam seems to suit them most advantageous ly. Sow the seed at a depth vary ing from one-eighth to one-half inch deep. The rows may be spac ed approximately ten inches apart on raised beds. The crop must not be allowed to dry out at any time during the growing sea son. Constant moisture is essen tial and this is especially true during warm weather. The French Forcing carrot is one of the earliest sorts to ma ture. Crops grown under ideal conditions should he ready for harvesting in Just about sixty days. The French Forcing carrot is reddish-orange in color and globe-shaped. The Chantenay ma tures about ten days later, attain ing a length of close to six inches. The flesh is sweet and extremely tender. Another excellent carrot for the home garden is the Danvers Half Long. It grows to about two inches across and seven inches long. The imperator resembles the Danvers somewhat except it has rounded shoulders and the core is rather difficult to see. Beets Mature Faster Beets are also another year around crop. Beets as a general class mature somewhat faster than the carrot. The seed is quite light due to the spongy covering around the actual seed. It is inter esting to note that this shell ab sorbs a great deal of moisture and consequently the soil in which beet seed is sown should be fairly moist. A scarcity of water may never pet to the seed germ, being completely absorbed by the spongy shell. Too light a soil will not prove a congenial environ ment for a beet crop. Sow the seed In moist earth at a depth of about one-half an inch. Mulching with drv soil after the seed has been planted helps to conserve the moisture. Trapping Season To Open Nov. 15 Trapping season for mink, mukkrat, otter and raccoon opens November 15, it is announced by the Oregon State Game Commis sion, and will extend to February id. mere win oe no open season on marten, fisher, beaver and ringiau cats. Trapping license fee Is $3 and trappers are required to mark their traps with a brand register ed with the Commission. Land owners, who are not required to uuy a license, must, nowever, register the location of their land with the Commission each season they trap. All persons are re quired to file within 30 days after the close of the season a report on the number of animals taken. Stale refuges will be open to the trapping of furbearing ani mals witn the exception of the following which remain closed: Sumner Lake Management Area, jke Oswego game refuge. Stur geon i-ake game refuge. White tail Deer refuge and all city and municipal watersheds now in refuges. The last legislature passed a law abolishing the sale of trap ping licenses to non-residents. apart and make certain that the seed is not planted too deeply in heavy land. Perhaps the earliest maturing beet is the Extra Early Egyptian which should yield a crop in close to fifty days. The roots are dark red In color and of a medium size. The Detroit Dark Red beet, a main crop variety, is quite round in shape and somewhat larger than the early types. Two ether favorable varieties for home growei-s are the Crosby Egyptian and Early Wonder. Cold Wave Extends Info Southern States I By the Associated Press) Autumn's first cold snap chill ed a wide section of the country today. Temperatures ranged from zero in North Dakota to around the freezing mark in most parts of the South and were generally below the 32 mark from the Rockies to Central Pennsylvania. The mercury dropped to 32 in Nashville. Tenn., this morning and temperatures in the 30 s were reported in Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Grand Forks, N. D., was the coldest spot today, with a mark of zero, and the mercury was near that figure In other North Dakota cities. Lea Act Violation Denied by Petrillo CHICAGO, Nov. 13. P President James C. Petrillo of the AFL musicians union pleaded innocent yesterday to a charge of violating the Lea act, passed by congress to curb nis powers. The musicians' chief is accused in a criminal information filed in federal court of compelling radio station WAAF, Chicago, to employ three musicians which the station contends are not need ed. In response to the request of Pctrillo's attorney, Daniel Car mell, for an early trial, Judge Walter J. La Buy set the case for Dec. 15. "This case has been batting around before the public too long," Carmell declared. Petrillo, he said, has "saved the music culture of the nation. Without him, the country would be platter-happy." Carmell was referring to the current rage lor record-playing programs on the radio. The government's charges were filed Oct. 15. Judge La Buy held a similar complaint unconstitu tional but the supreme court reversed him and ordered anoth er trial. DeGaulle Urges Alliance To Resist Communism PARIS. Nov. 13. (JP) Gen. Charles de Gaulle urged France yesterday to take the lead In forming alliances with the Unit ed States, Great Britain and oth er countries "who feel themselves similarly menaced" by commun ism. "France must take the Initia tive because she is the most men aced," the leader of the anti communist rally of the French peoole told a .ews conference. "France Is the most menaced externally by this enormous pow er tne most lormictame sne has ever faced and internally be cause, independent of her own force, this power has assistance within France," de Gaulle declared. World Fliers Forced Back In Alaskan Region FAIRBANKS. Alaska, Nov. 12. (.'Pi The way home finally lay south again today for the 'round the world fliers, George Truman Chapman's Pharmacy and Clifford Evans, and their tiny planes "the City of the An- geis- tne "the City of Washington." With their hops always north ward since touchipg Calcutta and tsancKoK in late September, the two former Army pilots reached Big Delta, Alaska highway point 90 miles southeast of here, late yesterday on a hard five-hour nignt from Anchorage. They planned to resume their trip today. On yesterdays hop, they cross ed the Alaska coastal mountain range in which Mount McKinley towers 20.300 feet and after reaching the Interior encounter ed strong head winds. The winds forced them to turn back to Big Delta, after once passing over that settlement. Only at Iceland, crossing the Atlantic, did they reach this far north on a flight which has now covered more than 20,000 miles. They left Teterboio, N. J., Aug. .
