NOBODY could start a serious ruckus between us and our fine neighbor to the north. Too many of us know too many Canadians AS INDIVIDUALS. Too many Canadians know too many of us. We have come to like and RES PECT each other in a wide and deep and general way. You don't fight readily with people you like lind respect. THE truth, which is still too much obscured, is that the general run of people EVERY WHERE are pretty decent. There is no such thing as a NATION of crooks and thieves and abusers of women and children. The PEOPLES of the world are loo much misrepresented to each other by their politicians. WASHINGTON is In a slew over another of those big LITTLE Issues that create so much ill will when wrongly handled. The labor department, the dis patches inform us, Is trying to decide whether or not to make public the Information the unions will have to file under the new Taft-Hartley labor law. It seems that the law Isn't specific as to publicity. Labor Secretary Schwellenhach mops his worried brow and comments: "I just don't know the answer." WHY not make public as to labor all the things employ ers are required lo make public? That and no more. iMake no fish of one and fowl of another. TREAT EVERYBODY ALIKE. That Is what we need in this country. Favoritism, on first one side and then the other, lies at the root of most of our worker-em ployer troubles. WHAT we need are fads and still more facts. Frankness and still more frankness. Secrecy is had business. It panders In human readiness to think that ANYTHING Is all right If only you don't get caught at it. ' . The gentleman probably squirmed uneasily when he saw the figures in print. Yet it was doubtless a good invest ment of the stockholders' money. Good direction at the top Is essential to good profits. Still, it Is a mighty good idea to let the stockholders and the pub lic generally know what the top men who handle stockholders' money get for their services. It keeps the atmosphere clearer. Also, It keeps the big boys on edge to do their best to EARN their talariej. MUTUAL AID PLANNED , By CHARLES V. With Roseburg as a center, it Js proposal tf work out a system whereby the hearest noighbpf tpaj jwn hit by a big blaze would send its equipment; fo: the-scerre-'while apparatus from Roseburg would move'in-a'sliiaickly.' as possible to protect the area left briefly without protection. This move-up technique, now practiced generally in Isrge cities, is proposed for Oakland, Sutherlin, Roseburg-, Myrtle Creek and Canyonville, at pres ent, but probably will be extended to cover the entire county as soon as details are worked out. The City of Oakland, which has inadequate equipment, hag placed an order for a modern fire engine, suitable for local needs as well as being sufficient to deal with rural fire protection. Mayor John Edwards is directing efforts to create a rural fire district in the Oakland-Sutherlin area. The Oakland fire department is engaged in a study of im proved fire fighting technique, and has been consulting with the Roseburg department relative to details, of municipal operations as well as procedure in handling rural calls. Oakland now must provide protection for the huge indus trial plant of the Martin Box Co., which at present has the county's largest payroll. The Fir Manufacturing Co. has started operation of its plywood plant at Myrtle Creek, Sev eral new mills have been added to Sutherlin's already large industrial section. Construction of the Harbor Plywood Cor poration's factory at Riddle will raise new fire protection problems' for that community. Altogether, the rapid indus trial expansion is challenging ability of the various munici palities ind thoir respective fire departments. ; Heretofore, any community needing help; has called upon its neighbors. Occasionally towns have been left temporarily without fire apparatus when equipment was sent to a.neigh boring municipality.. With so much valuable property requir ing protection, it is dangerous to leave any section unguarded for. any-great length of time, (. . It is very probable that as the system is extended to cover more territory, the cooperative arrangement rrftiy include Eugene lo the north and Grants Pass to the south. At present there is'no set plan in obtaining aid. A stricken city simply broadcasts an appeal for help and equipment from three, or, four towns may respond, leaving their own communities unguarded. Organizing technique for progres sively advancing equipment will save time the most im portant factor jn fighting fire while assuring constant protection for valuable property. Red Nichols, Orchestra Get Elks' Return Date A surprise return engagement has been arranged by Roseburg's Elks for Red Nichols and his combo band to appear at the Ter race ballroom tomorrow night. ' Nichols, a veteran trumpeter of many of the nation's top or chestras, received the greatest ovation of any of six orchestras to appear here this year. The orchestra, comosed of piano, bass saxophone, drums, trombone, clarinet and tenor saxophone, plus Nichols on the tnimpot and vivacious blonde Dottie O'Brien, vocalist, plays sweet swing as well as the original Dixieland jazz for which Nichols is famous. Tickets for the semi-formal dance, open to members and their guests, are on sale by reservation only. Medford Veteran Saves Five Persons From Fire PIIRATA, Wash.. Aug. 7. (.PI A 22-year-old Medford. Ore., war veteran, Gerald Flerling, was credited today with saving the lives of five persons, Includ ing three children, from a fire which swept through a six-unit temporary apart meat house here yesterday.
