UP) The Late President Roosevelt preferred Harold Ickes to Henry Wallace as presidential timber in 1938, James A. Farley reported yesterday. "Henry would like to run for president," Farley quoted Roose velt. "However, I'd rather have a fellow like Ickes who, at least, is a fighter. "Ickes will go through with whatever he has in mind. But you never knew what Henry will qo. He n in lavor oi one tning to day and something entirely dif ferent tomorrow." The former Democratic Na tional chairman, in the second of a series of articles in Collier's on "why I broke with Roose velt," also said Mr. Roosevelt wanted Farley to run for govern or of New York in 1938 to "get the proper background for 1940." As it turned out, Mr. Roosevelt himself ran in 1940 and was elected to a third term with Wal lace as his running mate. Ickes remained as secretary of the in terior aod Farley broke with "the boss." He finally quit in August of that year as postmas ter general and party chairman. Farley said the discussion of Ickes and Wallace, who is now threatening a third party in 1948 ee.me up at a dinner April 12, 1938. On another occasion, Farley re lated, Mr. Roosevelt spoke differently- yf Ickes, blaming him for "many ol the stories that leak" cut of cabinet meetings." Ickes now is a syndicated columnist. C June 20--(D - A papal cross carved on n tree at Albert Head on Esquimau Bay, four miles southeast of here, mav prove nn important link with the Spanish explorations in Juan tie Kuca Strait ir7 years ago. A party of historians has ex mined the cross and provincial Archivist Willard E. Ireland said it appeared to tally with one de scribed by the Spanish explorer Manual Quimper in a diary on explorations in 1790.
