Douglas Ccnnty is -Buffering pains of progress. As Ore
gon's most rapidly expanding industrial community, the
county is faced this year with a staggering tax program.
Soverlil of 'our t&mWunities have already met the necessity
of greatly increased taxation. ,Myrtle Creek, Reedsport,
Sutherlin, and others have been striving valiantly to keep
up with ripjd (expansion, 'only to find lhat; plans full short,
with' still' more loud1 in flight. Riddle has voted bonds for
sewage disposal. Myrtle 'Creek recently Voted $G8,000 in
bonds for .development anjl expansion of the water and light
systems. 'Every communitjy In the county will be faced this
year with greatly enlarged school budgets. . : , : j :
Roseburg taxpayers ha-ve been shocked in the -past days
by revelations concerning-thc needa of our municipality and
schools. If tax proposals are voted in, accordance" .with pro
posed . budgets, pillage for city i and school purposes will
jump from'ff possibly to 80 or, more millsi .'approximately'

Motorcycle Races

An estimated 2000 persona yes
terday watched Bill Love, astride
an English model bike, 1 roar
around ten laps to capture sweep
stake honors in the first novice
motorcycle races to be. held in
Douglas County.
Twelve riders of this .county
parUcipated in the spill-punctuated
races on the cyclists': dirt
track, located north of Brown's
bridge near the Country Club.
The card was sixmsored by the
King Cobra Motorcycle Club and
Love Motor Company.
Love, native of Umpqua dis
trict and organizer of the races,
recently completed a 32,000-mile
tour with his wife of the nation's
largest motorcycle tracks, gain
ing considerable fame on speed
ways at Minneapolis, Minn., Rich
mond, Va., ,and Indianapolis, Ind.
Yesterday he turned in a four
tenths mile lap In 27 seconds.
Next week he will enter the Benton-Lane
speed classic at Eugene.
While spills and crashes were
frequent througout the after
noon's three preliminary heats
and the final four-mile stretch,
riders suffered no major injuries
before jthe sizable' Jhrohgtwhirh
brought more than 500 autotrio
bUqs to rhe track site., , . '

Carlsen, 20-year-old converted
