Bartlett and sons, Dean and Richard. Orchestra practice was followed by a social hour, after which Mrs. Barilett served de licious refreshments. COUNTRY CLUB LADIES TO MEET ON THURSDAY The Ladles of the Kosehurg Country Club will meet Thurs day morning at nine-thirty o'clock at the clubhouse. The story o ,'hureh goes back to last year when four or five GIs were poking through the rubble along Yokohama's famous Blufl section. Suddenly thev came upon wnat was leit of a church of fine Norman architecture. Rec ognizing It as Episcopal, J he church of their own faith, the ois organ clearing away the de bris left by an Incendiary raid, and set up an altar inside. With the coming of winter, thev had io find new quarters for their services and arranged for a chapel in the small Japanese house next door. They located a Japanese Episcopal blshon and moved their altar to the house. A Japanese woman sewed strips ol blue material Into an altar hang ing. Four rusty door hinges were made Into wall sconces. A Japa nese carpenter made wooden candlesticks. Beer cans had to serve temporarily for the sacra mental wine. But services were held. Gift Shop Pays Pastor News of the small chapel spread, attracting both Ameri cans and Christian Japanese. To day, between 15 and 20 Ameri cans and British attend the first Sunday morning services. A sec ond is held an hour later for about 25 Japanese. Some 60 Japa nese children attend Sunday school. Douglas W. Overton, American vice-consul, now one of the little church's guiding members, says Ihe church is entirely self-sus taining. The pastor's salary of 200 yen per month Is paid from receipts of a Utile gift shop estab lished by the groun. At the sug gestion of the Japanese, each con tributes an article, preferably something he has made, and sale of these items supports not, only their own church but another as well. When those GIs lit the candles on the altar of the bomb-gutted church, they became the nucleus tor a scattered group or Chris tians who needed such a light for a new beginning.
