IWhat do we hope to gain? a tifE'RE probably Just register- If ing our opinion. By and large, our stand is an academical' ly admirable one. We're saying to the world that WE think elections should be wholly free that everybody should have his say at the polls, unscrutlnized by secret police and unhampered by DOM IN ANT cliques and governments. (We're TRYING to talk to the people In these countries who dont like communism and who 'on't want to be absorbed Into the communist system. There must be many such. These little countries have alwaya wanted Independence. They have fought for It for centuries. They are probably no more eager to be rated by Russia than they were In past centuries to be ruled by Rome, by Austria, etc. They want to fun their Own affairs, and our stand for free elections ought to be popular with them. It ought to build in these areas the belief that Amer lea Is the champion of freedom not only for the individual but for small people. THE trouble Is that we arc more or less talking without an ati dlence like a man muttering to himself In a padded room. Rus slan censorship sees to it that all peoples under the communist thumb hear only what Russia wants them to hear. Our efforts are badly blocked by the highly efficient lion curtain. ARE we wasting our timcT Not necessarily. IS nearly as we can see at the f present moment, two systems are building up In the world. One Is the single-party, totall tarlan, the Individual lives and works for the glory of the state ftystom Inspired and led by Rus sia. The other la the system, led by America, wherein the state exists to serve the welfare of the Individual. Over the long pull, our system Is going to appeal MORE to In dividual men throughout the world than the Russian system. OVER THE LONG PULL. Its ap peal will be so great as to pene trate Iron curtains, wherever they may be. So, it seems reasonable to be lieve, we should lose no op pop tunlty lo explain our system and to stand up for Its basic prln ciples throughout the world. II ERE is thought, offered for what It is worth: Russians, barely out from un der serfdom, are probably SIN CERELY SATISFIED NOW with their system. Throughout the preseut generation, they are like ly to remain satisfied with It. But, OVER THE LONG PULL, U can't stand up In the minds and In the hopes and aspirations ol men against the American system of freedom for the individual to do what he wants to do within the limits of the rights of others. STANTON An unusual advertisement appears in today's News Review, launching a new campaign to secure additional financing for the; proposed Swimming Pool Civic Center project advanced by Roneburg's Park and Playground Com mission. A comrilittee. headed by A. S. Coen, is sponsoring the project, urging cash contributions to the fund through either single or multple year pledges. Included in the long-range plan is a modern swimming pool, eventually to be enclosed for all-year use; a wading pool for amall children, separate from the adult pool; an auditorium of ample size for small or large gatherings; a gymnasium for general use by adult and youth groups. The plan is projected on a pay-as-you-go basis one pro ject at a time, but working toward a goal of full develop ment The committee, Mr. Coen elates, estimates total cost at from $400,000 to $500,000, of which approximately one-half would represent cost of the swimming pool. The Park Commission now has available the sum of $28,000. It is hoped the current campaign will increase the fund sufficient ly to permit start of construction in 1947 of at least an open air pool. Enclosure can be arranged at a later date when more money is obtained. Unique in the advertisement announcing this project is the use of futuristic news items explaining In a most in teresting manner the multiple purposes to be served by the proposed civic center. Some persons may be startled by the magnitude of the plan, but the committee does not anticipate that the project can be brought to Completion in the immediate future. In stead, the proposal is to proceed by units, each unit being Of moderate cost, but culminating in a well-coordinated plant of sufficient size to serve a city of from 25,000 to 30,000 population. An effort will be made to secure as many continuing pledges as possible. If the committee is successful in pro moting annual contributions over a period of years, con summation of the project is assured. Be cause of the extreme shortage of newsprint, the News- Review was unable to furnish space for the desired full-page announcement. The two civic-minded business firms, both desiring more advertising space for their own purposes and needing display for the holiday season, voluntarily relinquished their previously contracted space to permit pub lication of the Commission's advertisement Pressure upon the News-Review for more .advertising space is increasing, yet the newsprint situation apcars to be worsening instead of improving. In our recent contacts with paper mills we have been unable to secure assurance of any substantial or adequate increase for the coming year. At present the News-Review is satisfying only a bare majority of the demands for space. For instance, during this week, to daic, we Have rejected between four and five full pages of advertising, despite the fact that we have en dangered our paper supply for the balance of the year by exceeding our weekly allotment.
