Following the business session conducted by the president, Mrs. Joe Guthrie, a delightful social hour was enjoyed. The Misses Gladys and Ilene Story and Joan Williams assisted the hostesses In serving. Those attending were: Don West, Frankle Holgate, Maurice Vorrelphol, John Fisher, Beverly Pope, Evelyn Cornish and Laura Marshall. They were accom panied by Mr. and Mrs. Newell Morgan and Miss Loma Mae Jones, who were all on the faculty of the camp. Besides teaching, Mr. Morgan was dean of men, and Mr. and Mrs. Morgan had charge of rec reation for camp. These young people who attended will bring a report of the camp to the eve ning service or tne cnristian Church next Sunday evening. The quilt is being made for Bobby Rose. CAMP FIRE COUNCIL FAVORS CONSTRUCTION OF SWIMMING POOL AND PARKS At a recent meeting of the Roseburg Camo Fire Council, Mrs. Walter Allen (Betty Shoe maker, was employed as part-time executive secretiry to take over duties now performed by the president and other council mem bers although they will retain their offices. Camp Fire program has been extended and grown so in the past few years that the council feels justified In taking this action. Mrs. Allen is well qualified for the position, being a former Camp Fire pirl herself. She has attended vailous camps and taken numerous training courses and at one time was director of a local camp. She will endeavor to conduct training courses for local guardians some time this full. The council went on record as favoring immediate steps toward construction of a swimming pool in Roseburg as soon as materials are avilahle. Since some funds are already on hand for this pur pose, It is felt by the council that this matter should not be further delayed. At a previous meetine the council passed a resolution stat ing the need for a park or parks in Roseburg. The city owned "so called" park in Laurelwood was cited as an example of an easily developed natural park. The contour of the land is Ideally and naturall" 3ulted for park pur poses and is partially covered with Madrone trees. The group went on record as favoring de velopment of this site for park purposes. Throughout the city are other places that should be developed in a like manner. Mrs. Marsh served as an instructor at the camp. Miss Anna Jo Stalker of Corvallls and Miss Jackie Sutton of Roseburg were guests for the week in the camp of the Looking"lass dele gation. Smith River Falls Ladder Completed REEDSPORT A fish ladder at Smith River Falls, a project started in 1938, was finally com pleted last week when H. C. War ren, state fish commission engi neer, announced the, completion of the Job under joint operation of the state biological survey, the state game and state fish commissions. It was finajly decided that five-foot walls or divisions will be sufficient to allow the game fish to advance over the fails to the spawning grounds. After two poles were blasted, one near the foot, the other near the top of the falls, the steps were cemented by a crew of four men, who completed the job In six days. An intensive study of condi tions at the falls showed that silversldes and Chinook can easily jump the five-foot wall and that chubs and other scrap fish cannot make the grade. Sports fishermen of this sec tion are reported to be delighted with the finished product and it is believed that the, ladder will Improve the Smith River as a sportsman paradise.
