HIS speech, read between the lines, confirms the probabil ity that the world Is dividing up into two systems communism, dominated and led by Russia, and free enterprise, led by the Unit ed States and Britain. Russia is obviously moving heav en and earth to discover, as soon as possible, the secret of the atom bomb. LETTERS Jo the Ediior Wants Sidewalks In South Roseburg For a number ot years, we, the people in the south end of town, have been walking In a narrow, crowded street, where there Is too much traffic and parked cars, even If we did havo sidewalks, which we do not have. I have narrowly missed being hit a number of times. I would like to ask whose re sponsibility it- is to furnish side walks without being forced to do so or bcloTe someone gets killed. . Ralph Wilbert Gibson, took Carol Ann Smith of Riddle as Ills bride. The double ceremony was per formed by the Rev. Bennle Howe of the Pioneer Methodist Church St Coquille. . POLITICAL By CHARLES V. STANTON A recent cartoon, published depicted a rider who bought that if one side of the horse That may be carrying economy a little too far, but we wish our federal government would become a little "tighter" with our money and quit its useless spending. Of course, there is talk of "economy". Reconversion Di rector John R. Steelman, for instance, has demanded "new slashes in federal spending," but wants to do his cutting at the expense of the Army and Navy. Simultaneously with his demand that we reduce our defense expenditures, he urges revival of price controls to ward off "costly and irretriev able" inflation. If we're to cut expenses of any "army" let's cut the cost of the "army" of bureaucrats and bureaucratic employes. We realize we're asking the impossible. There's little chance that an administration, which for many years has been playing politics with the country's welfare, is to be expected voluntarily to boot out of their jobs several hun dreds of thousands of unnceded employes, each of whom rep resents a potential administration vote. The political situa tion is getting a little too "hot" to take such chances. Apparently, in Mr. Steelman's opinion, we're better off to drop reconversion of our Army and Navy, scrapping effi ciency of our military defenses at a time when this nation needs to be militarily strong, in order to retain a reconver sion army of thumb-twiddling employes who in late months have accomplished very little except obstruction employes of departments which are devoting much time and attention to fright psychology, designed to scare the American people into belief that the time-tried way of American life no longer is possible and that we must by Washington longhairs. The administration hasn't Navy votes ; consequently our according to politically-guided think of directing its economy toward elimination of useless alphabetical agencies, departments, bureaus, authorities, ad ministrations, and what-have-you, when it would mean free ing hundreds of thousands of people from job-obligated voting. We need governmental economy, but not the type of econ omy desired by bureaucrats, who would sacrifice anything except jobs and voies. Before we can expect elimination of free-and-easy spend ing, we must have public realization of the dishonesties of administrative tactics as evidenced in the wool-pulling use of subsidies to hide true price levels, padded payrolls, etc. When the American public becomes fully aware of the wide spread waste of tax money, we will gel fast action on an economy program. After all these years of extravagance, coupled withj neces sary wartimd expenditures, it in time wo were getting around to paying the fiddler. We must demand a balanced budget, elimination of un necessary and wasteful bureaus, and porkbarrei appropria tions, while we set our financial house in order.
