ROSEBURG'; OREGON, MONDAY, "JULY T, '1945 FIVE Oaks, Seals Beth Win Twin Bills fo Stay Game Apart (By the Associated Press) The Oakland Acorns and the San Francisco Seals could sigh with reliel today, the Oaks be cause they still were in first place and the Seals because they still were only a game behind. Both won doubleheaders Sun day to climax a week of touch and go baseball. The Oaks took six of seven during the week from Seattle and the Seals six of seven from San Diego. This week the Oaks take on seventh-place Portland while the Seals tussel with third-place Los Angeles. The Angels are seven and one-half games behind the Seals and eager to collect some fur pelts. They took a twin bill from Portland yesterday to grab five of the seven tilts for the week. The league's other clubs Hol lywood and Sacramento split Sunday but the Stars kept in the near-clean sweep parade with six wins and only one loss for the week. Scarsclla of Oakland had a great day Sunday. He hit five for seven, batting in four runs, and collecting his 21st homer, which won the nightcap in the sixth, 4-1. Pulford, starting for his first time on the Seattle mound, had hurled shutout ball up to that point. In his own half of the fifth Pulford had blasted out a triple, scoring Beard who had singled to get on. The Oaks won the opener 5-3. At San Diego, Seals pitcher Rossi drove in the winning run of the opener in the seventh after Hoover singled and went to second on Sprinz's sacrilice bunt. He scored from three for the 2-1 edge. The seven-inning nightcap was a 9-2 walkaway for the Seals. At Los Angeles the Angels won with what was almost a double shutout, 6-1 and 6-0. Osborn hurled his fourth victory in a row in the opener. Sacramentp shut out the Holly wood Stars in the Sunday opener 4 0, Freitas doing the honors for his eleventh win of the season. In the curtailed nightcap, the Stars won 6-2. Angelo Defeats Nazarian; Lynam Conquers Peters It was "meanie" vs. "meanie" in the headliner of the wrestling , program at the Roscburg Armory Saturday night. The victor was Bruno Angelo, two falls out of three, and the loser was Mike Nazarian. First and third falls went to Bruno in the respective periods of 7.:10 and 6:30, the first on a hammerlock and leg stomp, the deciding one with a Boston crab. Nazarian got fall No. 2 in 6:05 with a half Boston crab after each grpapler took turns throwing each other out of the ring, plus divers and sundry other tactics prohibited by the book of rules. A crowd of more than 800 was on hand for the festivities. Supporting bouts on the card introduced two newcomers to the fans. One was Mel Peters, a whis kered grappler of the villain type, who lost to Joe Lynam in the only fall of the semi final. An abdominal stretch did the trick in 21:05In the remaining period of the 30-minute bout, neither man gained a fall. Lynam clamped on three more ahdomi- . nal holds, but Peters saved him self each time by lunging into the security of the ropes, the last time just as the gong ended the combat. Joe Szabo, a Hungarian, was the other performer to give the local wrestling addicts a sample of his ability. He went down to defeat, however, before the kid ney punching technique of Billy McEuin, who registered the only scheduled fall in 16:10. Wind Volocity Heavy Wind velocity in Roscburg yes terday reached a high of 31 miles per hour for a period of five minutes, beginning at 4:34 P. M. Friday, the weather bureau here said. Nineteen little pis were born this week, to the big, red Duroc sow at the Rosebure Veterans Hospital pig farm in a record sized litter, Dr. George E. Mel vin, hospital manager, announced. Not all the little ones survived, however, for the mother sow step ped on and killed a few of her offspring soon after they were born. I The Dodgers sewed up the game early, jumping on Mort Cooper for four consecutive hits, good for three runs, in the first frame. They added another in the fourth, while Rex Barney, pitching his first complete game for Brooklyn, was vulnerable only in the seventh when South- worth s tilth placers scored their only run. The Cards lost a couple of heartbreakers, dropping the first game to Ostermueller, 39-year-old' veteran southpaw who scat tered 11 safeties for his seventh victory. Kiner's 10th homer with one on in the fourth proved the deciding blow. The Bucs won the nightcap in the last of the ninth when Catcher Baker singled in the only run of the game with two away to enable Strinehevlch to register his sec ond straight shutout triumph. Bosox, Senators Split Led by Catcher Wagner, who banged a pair of homers, the Bos ton Red Sox routed a trio of Senator moundsmen with 15 hits to win the opener 15-8. The Nats came back to rip the Sox 9-2 in the afterpiece. The Sox are now 81 games ahead of New York. Bonham, New York forkball expert, tried out his right arm and discovered to his sorrow that it could not meet the test as the Philadelphia Athletics shelled him to an early shower with a six-run fourth inning to beat the Bronx Bombers 6-3. Detroit's third-place Tigers im proved their position slightly by taking two close games from the St. Louis Browns 1-0 and 3-2, the latter in 10 innings. Newhouser hurled his 14th triumph in the litters. They are of the red Du roc breed, which is high in the production of meat and lard. More lard than the hospital can use is produced here and sent to other parts of the country. Oc casional surplus pork is sent, al so, to the Veterans Hospital in Portland. " ' The pigs grow to large size on feed supplied from the hosnital's earbage, thoroughly cooked and sterilized, Dr. Meivin said. Ap proximately 50 per cent of the feed is garbage: the rest, oats, barley and corn. Healthy litters of eight to 12 or 13 are normal for the regis tered breeding stock here. Jenkins, acting chief, has been appointed chief of police here to succeed Harry M. Niles, who announced he would retire July 1 on his doctor's advice. Niles, chief since 1934, was earlier granted a 90-day leave of absence because of ill health. He had served 36 years in Portland's police department, two in the fire department. Toothache Versus Headache EAST CHICAGO, Ind., Jul" 1. P) Stanley Szot, 43, had a toothache when he went to the office of Dr. Alfred Dalnko for treatment. When he left he had a headache. Szot was seated and Dr. Dalnko was reaching for the drill when lightning struck the office build ing. The lights went out and plaster from the celling began falling on Szot 'a head.
