LOCKWOOD HONORED ON ANNIVERSARY TENMILE Mr. and Mrs. Ro land Lockwood were very happily surprised Wednesday evening when twenty-Xour relatives and friends gathered at their lovely home to offer good wishes on their thirty-ninth wedding anni versary. The family presented them with a heautiful mirror to hang above the fireplace and other friends also brought gifts. A most delicious chicken dinner was served at G:30 o'clock to Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood, honor guests; Mr. and Mrs. Laurance Lockwood and two children, Norma and Larry; Mr. and Mrs. Don Lakey, Conrad and Kay Lakey; Abe Ward, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cen ters, Mr. and Mrs. Max Lockwood, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mulins, Mrs. Roy J. UP) Failure of the state legislature to provide adequate funds have made Oregon's Dublic institutions "a disgrace to the stale," John 11. Hall, state representative since 1921, told the Oregon Republican Club here. Hall blamed "niggardly" appre ciations and warned that the sttae's police organization may break up unless the 1947 legisla ture Increases salaries, now at a $200 a month maximum. "The boys are Just hanging on to see what action the legislature takes. If the legislature fails to make a decent and adequate ap propriation, we don't have any state police." he said yesterday. The reoresentative condemned the state for refunding taxpayers $21,000,000 in income tax surplus which he said "they didn't need and which could have been used to meet state needs." UP) Policeman Henry Rumsfield was without his motorcycle to day because he parked it behind an automobile while writing out a ticket for a motorist who drove through a stop sign. After getting the ticket the motorist started the car but it was in reverse and backed over Rumsfiold's motorcycle, wrecking it. The driver pleaded that the gear shifter stuck. Rumsfield couldn't find any violation in his book to cover faulty gear shifters, so the motor ist was released, but told to ap pear in court Monday. Sponsored and handled by the Roseburg Recreation department, it is the hope of that office that young children through the ages of 14 will take advantage of this playground program which will continue daily from 10 A. M. to 6 P. M. throughout the summer months. The Fullerton play ground, with a similar program for children residing in that sec tion of town, will open within two weeks, recreation director H. W. Gray said. Opening at 10 A. IH., the day will include a baseball game for boys under 15 years of age, foot races, shuttles, relays, ball throw ing contests, organized games for kindergarten ages, a sandbox for the tots, and various playground equipment including swings and slides. All of the day's events will be under the leadership of an ex perienced supervisor and cash awards will be given to the win ners of the various contests. Ages for contests will vary with each event and the program is ar ranged so that girls, as well as boys, will compete for prizes.
