ROSEBURS, OREGON, THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 1945 Postwar Work of Red Cross Told to Chapter Postwar activities of the Ameri can Red Cross were explained to the directors or tne DouRias County Chapter this week by Miss Kathleen Somerville, general field representative for Western Ore gon, who attended the regular monthly meeting. Disaster service and home serv ice, which are charter obligations, and first aid, water safety, nutri tion, home nursing and Junior Red Cross are among regular ac tivities of Red Cross chapter. To carry out service to hospital ized service men, the Douglas County Chapter has been re quested by Dr. George Melvin, manager of the Roseburg Vet erans Hospital, to organize a hos pital and recreation corps to en tertain the veterans hospitalized here. Miss Esther Dyar assumed the duties of Home Service worker for the Douglas County Chapter June 10, it was announced by Karl Plummer, chairman. Miss Dyar was connected with Roseburg High School as an Instructor in typing this past year. Her home is Antler, N. D. Attending the board meeting of the local chapter Monday were: Mr. Plummer, Mrs. Flossie Vir den, secretary; J. Ross Hutchin son, Dr. Morris Roach, Mrs. A. S. Coen, Judge D. N. Busenbark, Spencer W. Yates, Mrs. Al Kent, John Todd, Mrs. McGee, chair man at Yonealla; Mrs. Lota Maris, executive secretary, and Miss Esther Dyar home service worker. County, to register for a prelim inary roster. Information Is re quested by letter, giving the name of each member of the family, present address and tele phone number, name of Nebraska county In which the applicant for merly resided, and an expression of opinion as to whether a picnic is desired. Letters should be ad dressed, Beels states, to "The Cornhusker Clan, Box 2, Melrose Rt" or to "1544 Yale Ave., Rose burg." If replies received within the next two weeks indicate a favor able desire for a picnic, a commit tee will be created from among those who register and plans and arrangements will be developed and announced. M. at ROY'S s Dances Scheduled For Rodeo Week Two dances sponsored by the Sheriff's Posse and the reserve police will be part of Rodeo Week festivities, Captain H. G. (Dick) Baker said this morning. The Roseburg Junior Chamber of Commerce, which is advertising a rodeo-eve dance, has not been authorized by the posse to sponsor a rodeo dance, he declared. "The big rodeo dance," Baker said, "will he Saturday nl(,'ht. June 22, in the Armory following the wrestling matches, which will begin an hour early next week. "There will be no admission charge to the big rodeo dance. It will be Just a dime a dance, and people can dance as many dances as they wish. This dance is spon sored by the police reserves. "There will also be a free street dance Friday night, but the time and place have not kaen set. "It's alright for the Junior Chamber of Commerce to have a dance," Baker said, "but we haven't authorized them to call it a rodeo dnnre." ' Says U.S., Russia Approaching War PORTLAND, Ore., June 13. UP) America is already fighting a diplomatic war with Russia, Dr. H. R. Peters declared at the ses sion of tho Northwest Institute of International Relations at Reed College last night.
