That Is a dangerous combination. The situation that faces us hasn't arisen suddenly. The Ger man dcleat came some six months ago. It was apparent al most Immediately that unless de cisive steps were taken to provide food starvation would stalk Ger many when winter closed dow n. It was equally apparent that un less steps were taken to provide fuel thousands of Germans would irena to death. 1 It should ' have been equally apparent that unless something Was done with as little delay as possible to get German Industries lo going the danger of Idleness (which is a hostorlc mischief breeder) would be added to the dangers of cold and hunger. All of these things were plain to any casual observer. WET tragically little seems to J have Iwen done along these lines. Within the past week or so It has been reported mat oer man Industry Is operating at less than ten ncr cent of capacity which certainly doesn't provide many Jobs. General Elsenhower has warned repeatedly that nun oer l CROWING In Germany There is nothing to Indicate that fuel Is any more plentiful. nsT a word here about fuel. I rnAI. Is obviously the sick man of Europe. Coal production In Rnalund is Inadequate and England is a victorious, not a defeated, country. Nowhere near enough coal is being mined in France. It Isn't particularly sur prising, when everything Is taken into consideration, that coal should be short in Germany. But coal Isn't the only house hold fuel available in Germany, which is a heavily forested coun try. It is true enough probably that the Germans will need their forests for the future rebuilding of the country, ut their need for fuel NOW to keep them from freezing to death Is more Immedi ate than their FUTURE need of lumber and other wood products. Yet, up to a month or six weeks ago, little If anything had been done to organize the rutting of wood for fuel in German com munities. Wood cutting would have provided EMPLOYMENT for Idle hands and the fuel thus provided would have slaved off freezing In many a German house. THE whole thing seems lo pro vide confirmation of the Ger man suspicion, mentioned In I he Intelligence report Just made public, that we lack a policy In Germany. THERE have been problems, nl course. In Germany, we don'l aland alone. We have the HritKh nnd the Russians to consider. Hut even that doesn't excuse what ap pears to have been our apiwrenl drifting along from day to day, without any definite plan, in the zone of Germany that we are occupying. By Chariot V. St.ntos Roseburg will Le host for four days next week to the Northwestern Turkey Show. Heretofore the show has been held at Oakland, Oregon, but because of housing; and trans portation difficulties, decision was reached by the North western Turkey Breeders' association, originators and spon sors, to move the display to Roseburg. This year's show is being held in the face of many handi caps. It has been quickly organized, for there was no assurance until several weeks after V-J day that it could be held at all this year. Then it was necessary to perfect an organiza tion, decide on location, prepare a premium list (which, by the way, contains the largest amount ever offered in prizes) print and distribute a catalogue, circulate advertising ma terial, contact growers and prospective exhibitors with in formation, and perform hundreds of other tasks. Consider ing the short space of time devoted to preparations, we believe the officers in charge have been most efficient. But the greatest handicap to the success of the 1945 show is one which the officers can solve only with coopera tion of every resident of Roseburg and vicinity. Rooms MUST be found for out-of-county and out-of-state visitors who will be in attendance. These rooms are available only in private homes. One reason for moving the show from Oakland to Rose burg was to obtain increased capacity for accommodating visitors. Exhibitors, unable to find quarters in Oakland, objected to motoring to and from Roseburg. Under present conditions, fewer public accommodations are available in Roseburg than were obtainable in Oakland in Turkey show days before th& war. As a community we have the respon sibility of caring for our guests and maintaining the hos pitality for which Douglas county communities are noted. The only way in which we can meet this responsibility is to open sleeping rooms in private homes. It is urged that every home having one or more bedrooms available foe the four-day period, Monday through Thurs day, or for one or more days during that period, list the rooms with the Chamber of Commerce or with any of the Roseburg hotels. It is not expected that rooms be furnished Without charge. Visitors will be prepared to pay for any accommodations furnished them. It is imperative that accommodations be listed imme diately, as only a very small fraction of the rooms needed are available in hotels and rooming houses. Resumption of the Northwestern Turkey Show is of the, greatest importance to Douglas county. Through the work of the Northwestern Turkey Breeders in developing the broadbreasted turkey and making it the world's most famous breed, income to growers in the Pacific Northwest, and par ticularly in Douglas county, has been greatly increased. the lame ol the Northwestern bird has been spread as a jult of the annual show, which is given publicity in poultry magazines throughout the nation. , The Northwestern Turkey Show has since its inception been the world's largest exclusive turkey exhibit, both from the number of entries and number of individual exhibitors. Because of the emphasis given quality, the breed of birds has been improved until our turkeys command an important premium on the market. Thus the annual show in Douglas county has contributed very largely to progress and profit of the industry. Public cooperation is needed this year, as never before and it is hoped that every resident of Roseburg and vicinity who can assist in making the show a success, through fur nishing temporary accommodations in private homes, will give voluntary cooperation without further urging. Written Request Heeded for Rural Fire Protection Fire protection by the city for the newly established rural fire protection district will be pro vided, Fire Chief Glenn H. Tay lor said today, as soon as the district makes a proposal In writ ing for such protection. Until the city can purchase ad ditional equipment, fire protec tion will be provided under a temporary contract, Taylor said., It Is proposed that for answering calls, a charge of $25 be made, and for putting equipment in action to fight fires, a charge of $50 be made. These charges will have to be levied, Taylor said, until the fire protection district can eval uate the property within its boundaries and make assess ments. That will not be until next spring. When the city has additional equipment, which will not he for several months, and the rural fire protection district is able to levy tax assessments, a more permanent contract will be signed, Taylor added. The city attorney has ruled that the temporary contract can not be entered Into until a writ ten proposal comes from the rural fire protection district, in another week or 10 days. The city's only equipment now suitable for fighting rural fires is a truck with a 200-gallon water tank. The new district must pro vide supplies of water from streams and wells as soon aa it has the income to do so, Taylor said. Horace C. Conferring United States Senator Guy Cordon spent Wednesday at his home In Roseburg, leaving early today for Portland, where he will meet today at a special session of the Association of Oregon Land Grant Counties. The meet ing was called at the request of Senator Cordon, who, prior to his appointment to succeed the late Senator Charles L. McNary and his subsequent election to the liam Anderson is fifth member of the board. The fire protection district, which abutts the city limits, ex tends two miles east, three miles west, two miles north, and five mil south of Roseburg. office he now holds, served as the association's legal counsel. The meeting has been called to consider pending legislation affecting grant lands and other federally - ownned properties in Oregon. Senator Cordon returned to Oregon to attend the hearing held Monday in Eugene regard ing the proposed sustained yield master unit on the Siuslaw dis trict. The length of his stay in Oregon will be determined, he reports, by the urgency of legis lation brought before the Senate. If possible, he will remain In the state until after the holidays.
