Lower Umpqua to Be of Larger Size REEDSPORT Recreational development of the lower Ump qua valley Is deoidely on the up grade according to activities re cently noted in and about Reeds port and adjoining towns and country. John T. Btatison, who recently acquired the properties known as "Bill's" Trout Fishing Honds on the Umpqua a lew miles east of this city, has been here for the past week looking over his prop erty and making plans lor fu ture development. Mr. Branson states that he will commence, Just as soon as mate rial Is available, to rebuild and enlarge the present quarters at the ponds and erect a new build ing for merchandising purposes where one can purchase fishing materials and equipment as well as groceries etc. He also will be gin immediate construction of a boat landing, a boat house and other river bank Improvements as soon as he is granted permis sion for driving piling along the river bank by the United States Army Engineer's office. Mr. Branson has already placed an order for the building of not less than 30 river boats of various sizes for river fishing. These wUl be equipped with oars, but port able motors will also be available for those who wish them. Branson also will erect a build ing where fishermen may rent rooms and spend the night, so as to be on the river early during the fishing season. There will also be a recreational room where a social game of cards may be enjoyed as well as checkers and chess to while away the waiting hours. In case the sportsman's luck Is not so good on the Ump qua, there will still be the ponds which will soon be well stocked with trout etc., where a line can be cast and the speckled beauties snagged and the catch taken home to show to the friends. Other Projects Dated Two other recently purchased properties both west of the Bran son place, one the former Wil liam Andrews place and now owned by a man named Ploffer, and one but a few miles east of Roedsport, owned by Mr. Brad shaw, are both scheduled for ex tensive recreational development by the owners who are also hav ing plans drawn and will soon commence building accommoda tions for sports fishing. Gordon D and Virginia I-a Monte and James J. and Viola Walsh, who recently acquired the resort property formerly owned by George Lord at Westlake, the old townsite on the west arm of Siltcoos lake, have filed an as sumed name certificate as the Westluke Resort, which will be one of the Interesting resorts on this popular lake where fishing for trnut. hnss. and other Inke I Teen Age Comedy at Indian Wed. The Westlake Resort under Its new management has enjoyed an excellent summer season this year and, with the Improvement to be made, will be one of the outstanding lake recreational points in the coastal district. The owners of this lake place are former Californian's as are aslo Mr. and Mrs. Branson on the Umpqua. The Bransons have long been In the show and car nival business and have traveled extensively throughout the United States. They spent the last show season In Canada and w ill prob ably return there for the next season, but they admit that their hearts are on the Umpqua and this will be their home as soon as they settle down. Camas Valley CAMAS VALLEY Mrs. Brock man, who has been visiting with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Troy Burt and chil dren, returned to her home In Eugene Saturday. Bill Lowthcr of Los Angeles, fi vlsltinp with his mint nnd uncle, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Mark ham. Mrs. May Brown of Coos Bay visited" recently with Mr. and Mrs. E. Wheeler. Mr. and Mrs. Leatherman of Los Angeles visited over the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Joe flora. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Brown and son, Bill, left Saturday for San Francisco, where Mr. Brown will enter a hospital for treatment of his hand. Mr. and Mrs. Henderson and children of Grants Pass spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. A. Barnhart. Mr. and Mrs. Knute Holt and daughter, Arlene, made a busi ness trip to Eugene Tuesday. Misses Betty and Margaret Thrush of Grants Pass visited with their father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Thrush, Saturday and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Jantzer of Azalea visited Saturday with Mrs. Jantzer's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. Hagen. He was met In San Diego by his wife and 10 mont hit-old baby son whom he had never seen. Friends and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Lewis, who re cently had their home on the North Umpqua destroyed by fire, met on Sunday and put up a house for the family. Mrs. John Barney, who Is em ployed by the U. S. National Bank In Roseburg, has moved from town and is now staying with her parents, Mr. and Mis. H. D. Connine, near Gliae. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Van Horn are vistiing at the W. D. Van Horn home. Edgar, a son of Mr. Van Horn, has recently been dis charged from the Navy. The November P.-T.A. meeting will not be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, but instead will meet the following Wednesday, Nov. 28 when a special health program pertaining to tuberculosis will be presented. Miss Carroll, formerly a lieu tenant with the Wacs, has been stcured to fill the vacancy on the Hih school staff. The car belonging to Mr. and Mrs. August Spiedei, was stolen several weeks ago while parked on a Roseburg street, has been recovered In Oklahoma. Ralph Hickman has enlisted In the Army and Is now stationed at Aberdeen, Md., according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Hickman. The annitnl communitv Thanks giving dinner sponsored by Glide grange will be held at the school house. All members and friends are Invited to attend. Harry Turnbull has purchased a strip of river frontage opposite the Glide school from Fearn Moore and has started construc tion of a service station. Virgil Hodges has gone to Los Ahgeies Where he is attending Viola Bible college. Members of Glide grange are planning a benefit program at the hall December 1. Proceeds will be used for the roofing fund. Mrs. Ed Hartz and two sons of Vancouver, Wash., spent the weekend here visiting M. H. Mc Cord. father of Mrs. Hartz, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor McCord, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin McCord, and Mrs. Charles McCord. Cecil Harris has gone to Seattle where he expects to undergo an operation on his leg. The Home Economics club will meet Wednesday, December 5. at the home of Mrs. Geo. Casebeer to sew for the Red Cross. An all- day meeting is planned with a potluek lunch at noon. j The Baptist Aid and Mission " Society has planned a silver mis sionary tea to be held at the church Wednesday afternoon, De cember 28. Claude Alexander of Portland visited here last week with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Alexander. Rev. Morris Roach of Roseburg viiited friends in this community one day last week. Mrs. Thurman Cannon has re turned home after spending sev eral days in Portland visitine her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ivan Brown, ana baby son. Wlmer, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wimer, who has been very ill but w ho is recover ing satisfactorily. Miss Carey has returned to her home. Sam Thackrey, who has been a patient at the Veterans Facility, Roseburg, is reported to be slowly recovering. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Smith of Happy Vallev will stay with John Rice while Mrs. Rice Is in the hospital. Mr. Smith is recovering slowly from his recent illness but Mrs. Rice is still quite ill. Dr. and Mrs. Verne Adams are moving into their fine new house at the east end of Myrtle street. George Akcr Jr. is beginning a new house across the street from the Adams residence. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Conley are here from Portland visiting with old friends and relatives and attending to business matters. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Buell are remodeling and redecorating their house. Report of Fuel Shortage At Schools Is Denied DALLAS. Ore., Nov. 21 Published reports that the Dallas schools would be closed this week resulted In a large number of absences. School Superintendent S. E. Whitworth said yesterday. The reports, published last weekend, said the schools would close because of a fuel shortage. Whitworth denied any shortage exists, asserting there is plentv of wood at the elementary and high schools.
