"Billy the Kid" South worth who since his departure as team captain from the Boston Braves more than two decades ago led the St. Louis Cardinals to two world championships, will return today to sign as new tribe manaper. The deal bringing Southworth back to Boston is the second big money transaction completed by the club owners who, when they took over more than a season ago, vowed thev would spend to build the Braves Into a pennant con tender. The first brought big Mort Cooper here from the Cardinals after the star hurler went on strike lor more money.. " ST. LOUIS, Nov. 7. P The appointment of Eddie Dyer as manager of the St. Louis Card inals to succeed Billy Southworth was announced today by Sam Breadon, 'president o; the Card inals. A former top-ranking executive In the vast Cardinal farm system, Dyer resigned a vear ago to enter the oil business. However, he kept his finger In baseball by repre senting the Ked Birds ut meetings of the susMnuet lexas league. Uyer, now In his middle forties, Dnce performed as pitcher for the Cards in the early lU20's, but found his greatest success as a minor league manager. CONSOLIDATE CAMPAIGNS Gray Mask Will Battle Martinelii On Next Mat Card Angelo Martinelii, the Toledo, Ohio, flash, will meet the Gray Mask In the main event of Pro moter Hon Owen's Saturday night wrest ling card at the Rose burg: armory. The Cray Mask and Rufus Jones knocked each other out with head butts last week on the armory mat before one of the largest crowds in Rosehurg wres tling history. MarliiM'lli had been promised a match against the winner and has been matched against the Musk since the mys tery man apparently came off slightly the heltcr when his Ir resistible noggin met the Inv movable head of the big Negro, Jones. Martinelii teamed up with Joe I.ynam to win a slam bang vic tory over Jack Lipscomb and Hurk Davidson in the team match main event last week at Eugene. Martinelii is a very popular crowd pleaser and preiers to stick to orthodox tactics. He will have to use every trick In the book, how ever, if he is to hold his own with the Gray Mask. The hooded hoodlum usually comes out of the ring the winner, no matter who his opponent Is. ty Charles V. Sfentoe If some Douglas county residents are confused concern ing various money-raising activities, receiving publicity at the present time, we cannot be surprised. Roseburg; is completing a Community Chest campaign, the Victory Loan drive is under way, and the Oregon War Chest is being organized for territory outside the city of Roseburg. Throughout the greater part of the state the Oregon War Chest campaign was conducted during October. But organization in Douglas county was not undertaken in time to make a solicitation last month. The city of Roseburg, however, organized a Community Chest campaign, in which the War Chest, representing fed eral and state agencies, is included, together with local activities. This campaign is nearing an end, although the goal has not yet been reached. But nothing has been done outside the city with reference to the War Chest campaign. L. L. (Jim) Powers was named county chairman last week and will organize the canvass, which probably will be postponed until late in No vember or early in December, depending upon the duration of the Victory Loan campaign. The Victory Loan drive has not started rolling in earnest, as Earl Wiley, chairman, and his committee have been hold ing off launching their program until the Community Chest has been filled. Some high-powered action on sale of Vic tory bonds can be expected this week, with the campaign growing in intensify until the county's quota is reached, Our goal on E bond sales to individuals is $375,000. We hope that overlapping of campaigns can be avoided in the future, and that a more satisfactory system can be worked out. The Victory Loan, of course, marks the end of special War bond campaigns. This is the eighth and last of the series. This year probably will terminate the United War Chest, of which Oregon War Chest is a part. We will, however, be required to continue support for numerous national, state and local charities, and we believe it is far better practice to combine our solicitations into one major campaign than to maintain scores of continuing, overlapping and duplicat ing drives. I We would like to suggest a county-wide Community Chest for future years to embrace all except the Red Cross and March of Dimes, which, by the nature of their organizations, probably will require separate fund-raising campaigns. It would be necessary, of course, to adjust the budget by consideration of purely local agencies. The county at large, for instance, should not be expected to contribute to Rose burg's Recreation program, a department included in the city's Community Chest. Nor would rural districts, where no Jioy cot troops can be organized, be expected to raise funds for tluit purpose. But these adjustments would not be difficult to make. Quotas could be assigned each community and our chanties lumped into one county-wide Community unest drive, thus saving time, confusion and annoyance, w ith resultant saving in campaign expenses. Lt. Cel. Irving to Be in Roseburg for Army Recruiting Lt. Col. Robert L. Irving, of the Artnv recruiting station, Eugene, will be In Roseburg Tuesday, Nov. 13, instead of the usual Monday visitation, as Nov. 12 will be cele brated as Armistice dav. Colonel Irving will be at the armory be tween the hours of 9 A. M. and 12 noon and may be contacted by any persons desiring informa tion concerning Army enlistment. Men discharged since May 12, 19-15, who propose to re-enlist, should do so before Nov. 21 if they desire to retain their for mer grade and take advantage of re-enlistment furlough privi leges, Col. Irving states. Men dis charged after Nov. 1, 1945, are required to rc-enllst within 20 days after discharge to retain their former rating. Men granted re-enlistment fur loughs may receive 30 days' leave for each year of service with a maximum limit of 90 days. Over seas service counts double time toward furloughs. M. D. Fristoes, Sutherlin, Lose Infant by Death Charles Richard Fristoe, three-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Menefie D. Fristoe, died Saturday at Sutherlin. The child was born In Portland, July 16, 1945. The mother had resided in Sutherlin for the past month. The parents, and a sister, Vera Jane Fristoe, survive. The father, who is In military service, arrived in Sutherlin Mon day from Klamath Falls, and the parents took the infant's body to that city for funeral services and Interment today. Arrangements were conducted by Stearns mortuary, Oakland. Rally Day Planned By Church at Glide A special Rally day program is being presented at the Glide Baptist church next Sunday un der the direction of Mi's. Eugene Shrum, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Turnbull. The children's parts and some adult numbers will be given during the early hour, the pro gram being scheduled to start at 10 o'clock. Rev. Karl Faulkner will conduct the morning worship services. A basket dinner will be served and a most cordial invita tion Is extended to all neighbors and friends to join in the fellow ship and get acquainted services ol tne day. Evening services will start al 6:30 with a Young People's Pro gram of choir practice and other leatures. Ray of the Baptist church at Inglewood, Calif., miraculously escaed death Monday night when their automobile left The Dalles-California hitrhwav north of here and crashed Into a large tree, wnich prevented It from making a 75-foot dive down a sleep embankment. The minister and his wife were pinned In the car. The driver of a passing truck extricated them and took them to Fort Klamath. An ambulance brought them to a nospnai nere. Rev.
