Wo stand at the gateway of u new era, and It can be one of peace and prosperity, or it can he a nightmare of turmoil. It all depends on how we approach the problems of remaking our world, for that's what our task amounts to. It would have been a hopeless undertaking If Japan had been strong enough to stand the allies off aiid force a compromise peace. That would have allowed the Jap anese war lords to make another attempt at conquest a generation lience as we know from In formed sources they were plan ning to do. However, with Nippon ren dered impotent we shall have knocked out the last of the great powers which had the obsession oi enslaving their fellow men. Starting From Scratch The western world is free of Germany, which for generations tvas the chief force of evil in the Occident. Now wo me about to lid the eastern world of Japanese aggression. This double task had produced tremendous disorganiza tion. It is resulting in great po litical and territorial changes. Still, as I see it, this disorgani zation is paradoxically all to the good- if we set about overcoming it in the right way. It means we are starting from scratch in our efforts to create a new peace structure. The prewar world has been jumbled up, and we have the unprecedented privilege of reconstructing It on new and bet ter lines. It's a situation which hasn't existed before, since Adam. Of coiirsa this reconstruction Is going to take time, and it will be fraught with many perils. Kurope already Is torn with po litical upheavals, some of which have produced bloodshed. We are likely to see a lot more of this before the continent settles down. Kuropc also Is facing a dangerous period of hunger and cold and other privations, all of which are breeders of discontent. Much the same thing Is true of the Orient. Big Three Are Trumps However, it Is fortunate (we Impel that the ISig Three Amer ica, Britain and Russia have emerged from the war with such vast strength that among them Ihey .can. by working through lilt new United Nations security organization, keep things In hand during the rehabilitation. The only real danger of a breakdown would lie in a quarrel among the trio. Should they fall out lint maybe we'd better not go into that. It's no use dismissing this danger with the light remark that trouble among the Big Three is "ImiHissible." That word "im possible," in the mealy mouths of hands-aeross-the-seas orators, has caused more trouble than all the statesmen of both hemispheres could repair. Mighty lew things are "impossible" as witness the atomic bomb and most certainly quarrels among nations aren't impossible. Yet, while America, Hussia and Hrilain have some interlocking interests, there's nothing in sight wmrn should cause dissension. Their present disposition is to work together on world rehabili tation. They've had their differ ences of opinion already - lint the partnership remains sound. Victims of Navy Plane Crash Arc Identified THE CODE WORD IS BATAAN By Charles V. Stanton The code word is "BaUian." General MacArthur lost no time in letting the Japanese know there is to be no soft nor easy peace. The name the Japanese once boastfully shouted in an hour of victory over exhausted, disease-ridden American forces in our blackest hour reverses itself in the Jap mind as it becomes the pass word for communications between victorious American and defeated Japanese forces. Thut word "Bataan" is not only ironical, but it must con vey to the Japanese officials in charge of surrender pro cedure, a sense of fear and foreboding of what lies ahead. It means that MacArthur has not forgotten nor forgiven his temporary defeat. He has not forgotten the "Death March." He-has not forgotten the cruelties imposed upon his help less men, the prisoners of war, nor upon native civilians. Japanese leaders cannot fail to read into MacArthur's pass word a meaning that must dash their hopes of escape from their war crimes. To McArthur has been given the author ity to negotiate the surrender. To MacArthur has descended the mantle of allied supreme commander in Japan. And his code word is "Bataan !" The Japanese emperor and his cohorts must use that word when they address communications to MacArthur. They must use that word when they appear before him as envoys. They must speak that word. They must write that word. Bataan, Bataan, Bataan! How significant it be comes, expressing the'despair of a people beaten, rot because they lacked bravery but because they had been denied hj materials with which to fight on. Expressing the suffer ing, torture, and death of men who staggered over weary miles, prodtled and lashed by the victory-drunk ape men. Expressing the sorrow of the Filipino people and carrying the ominous promise of reprisal for wanton torture, rape and murder by a cruel, tyrannical and degraded nation. Only a man with an uncanny sense of dramatics could have chosen that code word; a man whose soul has been seared by suffering and sorrow. In an hour of victory MacArthur gives the word which marked his bitter defeat to proclaim the final glorious achievement. "We have lost, but this is temporary," proclaims the Tokyo radio. And the answer is "Bataan." As long as America remembers that word, Bataan," Japan's loss is not temporary but permanent, and Mac- Arthur, by one inspired gesture, has made it plain- that America does not intend to forget. . ' Our fear of renewed trouble with Japan lies in'-the -pos sibility of a soft peace. Japan must be convinced of the thoroughness of her defeat, she must be made to realize her war guilt, she must be stripped of all ability to wage future war. She must be made to truly repent and become a thoroughly civilized nation, instead of merely wearing the veneer, lief ore she can again be admitted into fellowship in. the society of nations. ; . Japan hopes for an easy peace. She hopes to restore her industries, her power to wage war. Her dream of conquest has been shattered, but Japan hopes to dream again. But the code word is "Bataan." As long as MacArthur lives, "Bataan" will continue to be the code word and its implications must leave fear and trembling in Japan. Gone is any hope of a soft peace. Gone is any hope of escape from responsibility for crimes against humanity. Ironic? The word is loo mild. As Japanese planes marked with green crosses, laud upon le Shinta, where Ernie Pylu lies among the men he loved, "in" on the last story of the war, the seal will be placed upon Japan's defeat; for the code word is "Bataan."' Harden, pilot, St. Clair Shore.'!, Mich., was killed in the navy plane crash Monday near La Conner, Skagit county, which also look the life of a navy doctor, the Lltli naval dis trict announced today. A second man, W. N. Monah.'in, avlntion radioman 3-c, Kairview, N. J., was listed as nilssin):. The Navy announced yesterday that Lt. Cmdr. Lxman Flynn West, medical corps reserve, Boise, Ida., was also killed when his parachute caught in the plane. Thirteen men parachuted to wfety. Atom Smashing Method Explained By OSC Physicist OREGON STATE COLLEGE The principles behind the atomic bomb are not new, as they have been included in advanced phys ics texts for several years, but the practical application of these principles Is the rrrw and highly secret development that has set the world ago); over the biggest scientific advance in modern ages. This Is the explanation given by Dr. W. Weniger, head of the physics department at Oiegon State college, in answer to a Hood of (tiestlons that reached him Just alter the atomic bomb reached .lapan. Pr. Weniger explains that the three things done recently and sorrel ly are-these, stated In sim plest terms: First, a larger sup i'ly of the rare uranium 235 has been obtained; next, new means of handling large quantities of it were devised: finally, a practical means was founds of "packaging'' it in such a way that the atoms could be split at a specified in stant. releasing the enormous re sulting energy In the form of an explosion. h.it "atom smashing" has been done previously was a labo ratory process rcuuiring huge ma chines that literally shot par ticles known as neutrons into uranium atoms, splitting the lat ter into two parts. Sumo satisfac tory way lias now been found to start this "bombarding" of atoms in the atomic bomb. This bom bardment selves only as a trig ger to set oft an explosion in the nucleus or centers of the atoms. The explosion of one atom sets off others in turn much as a farmer blasts out a ditch by bury Ing a whole series of iineonnecte l slicks of dynamite in wet ground. Firing one of these sticks sets off the next one. and so on till all blow up in what seems like a sin gle blast. j As to where vo much otiorty I c.uncs loan. Dr. 'Vfuijor (.:- plains that In the process of di viding these atoms of uranium, the two resulting pieces together are not as massive as the orig inal atom, and that the difference is destroyed as matter and trans formed into energy. It is this en ergy that gives such enormous speed to the pieces of the atoms that they break or explode the shell. The much smaller explo sions of previous tyes of bombs have been caused merely by com bustion or burning, such as oc curs when gasoline is burned in an engine to form gas and water vapor. Nearly all filling stations were ! closed today, but the few open- i Price Controls Off Big Batch of Items WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (AP) -Price controls went off today on scores of consumer Items, but the OPA said controls would remain on major cost-of-living items. Controls were removed from jewelry items, sports equipment, toys selling at retail for 2.i cents or less, cigaret lighters, pipes, some photographic apparatus, doilies pins and notions. The OPA also suspended, ef fective immediately, price con trols on a number of luxury furs and fur garments. Included are Persian lamb, beaver, silver and red fox, sable, ermine, chinchilla, kolinsky, Alaska seal, marten, ocelot and nutria. The suspension of price con trols on the fur items, rather than outright removal, means that OPA can bring them back at any time it regards prices as too high. The birds perched on the ter minal points of the cross, pre senting a symbolic picture against the evening sky. iney remained there for 15 minutes or more, on one occasion flying away and then returning to the same posi tions.
