Friday, July 27 Sacajawea Camp Fire group of Melrose to hold council fire at forks of the river following a 7 o'clock picnic supper for all members, their families and friends. Eight girls will receive higher ranks at the council fire. Florence Nightingale Tent No. 15, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War to meet at 6:30 potluek supper at Kiwanis Park. All members and their families are invited and asked to bring a covered dish, their own table service and sugar. Sunday, July 29 Annual picnic of Oregon O. E. S. No. 57 to be held at Canyon Auto Park. , ANNUAL MISSION RALLY TO BE HELD AT LUTHERAN CHURCH ON SUNDAY The annual mission rallv of St. Paul's Lutheran church will bo observed at the morning se'-vire of the church Sunday, July 22nd, with Rev. E. H. Becker, state Lu theran Institutional worker, as the speaker. Following Rev. Mr. Becker's sermon, he ' will tell of his work throughout the state. -,He will arrive in Roseburg this y : evening and will remain over Sunday. At the close of the service, a potluek luncheon will be held hy the congregation on the parson '' age lawn and the afternoon hours will be spent in games and visit ing. On Wednesday evening, the public has been invited to see the colored picture and talkie film of "Youth for the Kingdom" to be showed at 8:15 o'clock at the church by Rev. Harry young, ,vho is traveling with this film and showing it throughout southern Oregon. There will be no admission charge. , AMERICAN LEGION AUX. TO SPONSOR DANCE AT FACILITY MONDAY NIGHT The state department of the American Legion auxiliary, witli Mi's. Harry F. Hatfield, state hospital chairman, will sponsor a dance Mondav evening. At an Impressive afternoon ceremony, July 4th in the garden of the bride's home Miss Dorothy Viola Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nickard M. Nelson 0400 S. W. Custerway (formerly of Roseburg) became. the bride of Lt. Vernon R. Hood, United States Army Air corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orvil C. Hood, of Portland. Rev. Ralph R. Mul holland of Sellwood Baptist church officiated. - The bride was given in marri aco by her father. She wore a filmy white marquisette dress and her full illusion veil fell from a halo of orange blossoms. She carried a white prayer book with a spray of gardenias and stepha notis. Miss Phyllis Hood, the bridegroom's sister, was the maid of honor. She wore an aqua mar quisette dress and carried a bou ouet of Madonna lilies, baby breath, gardenias and white sweetpeas. Junior atendants were the bride's cousin Diane Caleson, In pale blue net dress, and the bride's brother, Myrton Nelson. Lt. William D. Proppe was the best man. Arietta Craig played a violin solo. Miss Joyce Lofthus and Mr. Edgar Mills sang solos and Miss Grace Mulholland plaved the organ. A reception was held afterward. Pouring and assisting were the bride's aunt and cousin, Mrs. Ruth Forslund and Miss Margaret Forslund of Roseburg, her cousin, Miss Esther Caleson of Superior, Wisconsin, Mrs. F. W. Caleson, Miss Virginia Barney, Mrs. Helyn , Smythe and Miss Clara Sisco. For going away the bride wore a light blue suit with white ac cessories. After a brief honey moon at Mt. Hood, Mr. and Mrs. Hood will be at home at 7628 S. W. Hood St., Portland. The bride was graduated from Roseburg High school in 1940. The bridegroom was graduated from Benson Polytechnic school in Portland and was presidenfrjof Delta Kappa PI fraternity at Multnomah college before enter ing the service. He was lust re turned from -Italy where he finished his missions as a naviga. tor with the 15th air force. Women's Marine reserve, San Francisco, attractive daughter of L. A. Willoughby, of Spokane, Wash., became the bride of Cadet James Roland Finlay, U. S. Navy reserve, San Francisco, son of Dr. and Mrs. G. C. Finlay, of Roseburg, at an impressive cere mony Wednesday, July 11, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Young, close friends of the bride,, in Portland. Rev. Ross Knott, for merly pastor of the Roseburg Methodist church, performed the nuptials at high noon. The greenery banked fireplace formed the improvised altar for the wedding service. The mantle was artistically decorated with an arrangement of white gladioli, white larkspur and Marconi daisies forming a large wheel with daintv sorays of pale Dink larkspur forming the spokes of the bouquet. The floral arrange ment was flanked by tall white candles in silver candelabra with the decorations being reflected in a huge delicately tinted pink mir ror over the mantle. Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. Jacobson played softly on the piano and accompanied Mrs. Louise Martin, who charmingly sang, At uawning. The bride, who was given In marriage by her brother, Dr. Frank Bowler, of Portland, was very lovely in a floor length wed ding gown of ivory moire, fash ioned with a full skirt. The sleeves were three-quarter length and the bodice was fastened at the back with tiny buttons. Her three-quarter length veil was held in place by a Juliet cap and she carrieu a Douquet ot talisman rnroi. centered with an arrange- n mim mi i-v J' ment of gardenias, tiny Dink rose buds and bouvardia. Satin ribbon streamers, knotted with tiny pink rosebuds, fell from the bouquet. Mrs. Frank Bowler, sister-in-law of the bride, was matron of honor and was charming in a gown of pale blue. Her corsage was of pastel colored blossoms. Paul Finlay, a cousin of the bridegroom, who had just arrived at his home in Portland from Tulare. Cailf.. where he has been an aviation Instructor at the IS S. army air base, acted as best man. A charming luncheon was served at one o'clock at the Young home to: Cadet and Mrs. Finlay, bride and bridegroom; Dr. and Mi's. G. C. Finlay, of Roseburg, oarents of the bridegroom; Dr. and Mrs. Frank Bowler, brother and sister-in-law of the bride; Mrs. Peter Finlay and son, Paul; Mrs. Louise Martin, Mrs. Knule Kershner. Roseburg, and Mr. and Mrs. George W. Young. Following a honeymoon at the summer home of Dr. and Mrs. G. C. Finlay on the North Umpqua, Cadet and Mrs. Finlay left Fri day. July 20, for their respective bases in San Francisco. Follow ing the bride's education, she en listed in the U. S. Women's Re serve and received her training at Hunter's college in New . York. For the last two years, she has been doing clerical work at the marine base In San Francisco. The bridegroom, who was gradu ated from Roseburg Senior High school, was one of the finest all star athletes while a student here. Chartier , Miss Betty Ann Lockwood, lovelv daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lockwood, of Columbia, Mis souri, and Clarence F. Chartier, Motor Machinist Mate, 2c, U. S. navy, were married at a very beautiful eight o'clock nuptial mass Wednesday morning, July 18, at St. Joseph's Catholic church in Roseburg. Father William Coughlan performed the cere monv. Lighted candles and beau tiful summer flowers decorated the altar. Preceding the ceremorty, Miss Annaloris Ward sang, "Panis An gelicus" by Caesar Franck and "Ave Maria" by Caesar Franck. The wedding processional and re cessional were played by Miss Ward. The bride was very lovely In a navy blue pin-stripe suit with white accessories.
