The figure Is based upon projec tion of increased enrollment in each grade during the past thiiv years, together with current reg istrations and indicated popula tion growth. 11 New Teachers Needed The school district during; the past year was required to employ four more teachers than had been provided in the budget. Indicated enrollment will necessitate 11 ad ditional instructors for the com ing year, making a total of 15 for the new budget, five new teach ers will he required in elementary grades, Superintendent K 1 1 1 o 1 1 stated, together with three mure teachers in each of the two nigh schools. Elementary schools; are ex pected to have a total enrollment of 1,000 as compared with 878 last year; junior high 523 as com pared with "lf)9 last year, and se nior high 513 as compared with 426 last year. Employment of 15 teachers lo meet the increased growth will cost the district approximately $30,000 it is estimated, being the largest item of new expense in the proposed budget. Other Items Increased Included also in the item of teaching is the sum of $4,700 more than last year, necessitated by the fact that the state board of education is changing text books throughout the school sys tem. General control, including sal ary for the city superintendent, clerk hire, secretarial expense, audit, office supplies, etc., is up ped $1,422 in the proposed budget. An increase of $2,728 is provided in salaries lor five principals In the schools of the district, super vision of various departments. In cluding art, music and physical education, and clerical hire. The greater part of the amount Is the sum of $1,000 provided for a full time clerk at Mho senior hi;h school. With all supply and fuel costs up and one new janitor required at a salary of $1,!j2') per year, the operating expense is set at $5,000 more than last year. An increase of $3,400 is pro posed for transportation to meet the cost of a bus set uo last vear. i but not covered by last year's i budget, when provision was made ! for conveying pupils from the ' area in the east part of town, due to the danger created by heavy j logging traffic. I Maintenance and repair charges remain unchanged from last year. Capital outlay is flown 3,uuo, tne emergency lund re mains unchanged at $2,000, and debt service is reduced as no prin cipal is due on bonds during the coming year and only interest must be paid. Improvements Projected Tlie committee has recom mended withdrawal of $19,441.03 from the special improvement lund to make alterations to exist ing building to accommodate greater enrollment lor the com ing year. The sum of $10,941.03 was ap propriated to provide three now class rooms at the Henson school, and to improve the playshed ami to install removable partitions on the stages at Hose and Fullerton schools to increase classroom space. At the Junior high it is proposed to spend $3,000 in sound proofing the band and music loom, install a cafeteria and add classrooms. The special improvement fund from which these changes will he made is not a part of the budget, the money having been previously raised lor mat rurpose and is now on hand. No Salaries Increased Unless voters consent to an In crease in the budget above the six per cent limitation, it will be necessary to drastically curtail school operations during the forthcoming year, A. .1. The board has authorized no salary increases other than those provided in tlie schedule adopted last year, pro viding for increases annually based an period of innlimicd serv ice, Ellison said.
