But too many people judge the quality of a sack of feed by the amount of protein stated on the tag or sack. Thus, if a turkey starter mash has 26 protein, it is presumed to be much better than another feed which has only 2i'A. This may, or may not be true. It all depends on the kind and Duality of the protein contained. Some fine day there will be a law requiring that not merely "protein", but "digestible pro tein" will have to be shown. Then it will be simpler to put a value on a feed without having to test it against some other feed. Take wheat for Instance. Wheat carries on the average. about 12"r protein, of which about 82 is available to tur keys. Wheat bran on the con trary, carries an average of 16' protein, of which only 60 is vailahle to turkeys. 100 pounds of corn Droduces 73.4 pounds of digestible nutrients to turkeys, 100 pounds wheat 75.1 pounds and 100 oounds bran only 42.1 pounds. Some turkey feeds are mixed with just half bran or millrun. They have lots of protein, and cheap protein. But a lot of that protein is wasted, because the turkeys just can't digest it. There is a great deal of new information about proteins, vita mins and amino acids nowadays. But until this knowledge is made more practical, it seems safer to continue using ANIMAL PROTEINS FOR POULTRY, and especially turkeys. In our experience, turkey coxey in Douplas county has been rare, and we advise caution in treat ing poults for coxey until the disease has been diagnosed by some one who knows. A great many glib diagnoses of coxey would be changed to some other disease, if the man making the diagnosis really un- have no old turkeys near the poults, we think it unlikely vou will suffer much from coxey.
