Society and Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER ANNUAL SPRING PICNIC IS ENJOYED CAMAS VALLEY The annual spring picnic of the Garden club was held on Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Emery Thrush. The house was decorated with spring flow ers. A special attraction was two window boxes of mammoth pan sies in full bloom. After the women had gathered, Mrs. Thrush led the way to a beautiful picnic spot in the nearby woods, where the bountiful dinner was served. A walk through the . iil-iu, i.iia. iiuit aiuiv ui.u n woods revealed many flowers in', Mrs Lioyd Roberts and the bloom. Mushrooms were collected by some and maidenhair terns dug up by others to take home to various gardens for transplant ing. The next regular meeting will be a t the home of Mrs. Bob Wheeler in upper Camas on the first Tuesday in June. The women will also meet at the school house for an all-day meeting with Miss McWhorter beginning at 10:30 on Tuesday, May 15. TO MEET TONIGHT The last meeting of the year will be held by the Junior-Senior High P.-T. A. tonight at 8 o'clock at the Junior high school. Mrs. Al ta Arthur, president, has urged all parents to be present. Election of officers will be held. The evening's topic, "Postwar Mil itary Training, will oc aiscussea by Paul Elliott, Omcr Monger and R. R. Brand. Discussion on a cafeteria at the Junior High school will take place. The funds.-are already on hand for this project, but the of ficers state they desire a vote of the members as to whether the hot lunch program will be put in to effect at the school. A musical program will be pre sented by students of both high schools and an exhibit of crafts, art and from the home economics department of the Junior Hlgn will be enjoyed. FAREWELL PARTY IS GIVEN ON APRIL 28TH WILBUR Mrs. Ralph Holt, Mrs . Ralph Loomis, Mrs. Ray Howard, Mrs. Everett Vincent, and Miss Francis Stout were hostesses at a charming farewell party honoring Mrs. Ed Mascal at the home of her sister, Mrs. loomis. In Roseburg. BORM' THlRTy YEARS TOO SOON Workers' Exodus j From Portland is Creating Problem PORTLAND, Ore., May 5 (AP) Shipyard and War Man power commission labor recruit ers In this war-boomed west coast cily are fighting what looks today like a losing battle against an ebb-tide of workers leaving be fore their jobs are done. Thousands of mid-western men and women who migrated west two and three years ago to build ships in yards here and at near by Vancouver, Wash., already have left for home and job of fering more postwar security. One Oregon planning commit tee estimates 16.000 workers have pulled out in the past 100 days. The exodus at Henry Kaiser's big Swan island yard has. arced swing and graveyard shifts to merge with day crews. During the same weeks, Kaiser's managers said they needed 1,000 more work ers to complete contracts on schedule. But this seems to he only a slarter. Newspaper columns ad vertising homes for sale . have doubled, and reality agents admit values are skidding as owners un load before leaving. Actually the move "back home" is just what some Oregon civic iciinci s nave ucen warning. Ever since it became evident a few months ago that the boom was about to go boom, WMC spokesmen and industrialists have warned there soon wouldn't bo enough jobs for everyone. The leak working force in half a doz en larger yards and plants here was about 120,000. When It was predicted this would dwindle to 25,000 by mid-August, worried natives hinted that newcomers should "go back where they be long." Now that they've started back, hoping for jobs at home, nobody is certain it was the right idea. Dorccs Johnson Ordered To Active Nursing Duty Dorcas Johnson. 3415 S. I WmvP III ft hNk l-mn W fffif ml If nil I A Eviction Rules Under Control of Rents Set Forth Any notice to vacate rental dwelling units subject to rent con trol in Douglas county must com ply with the iederal rent regula tions in order to be valid, now that federal control is in effect in this county, says Daniel D. Gage, district rent executive, Portland. "During the interim between May 1, 1945, the effective date of the rent regulation, and the date the Roseburg rent control office is bpened, there are bound to be questions on evictions," Gage stat ed. "Unfortunately we have no local staff at present to advise people on their eviction rights. "However, the salient factors may be pointed out. Any notice to vacate rented dwelling units must comply with the federal rent regulations, which do not prevent evictions, but limit them to certain specific grounds. One of the purposes is to prevent un lawful evictions which tend to cir cumvent the regulations." Advance Notice Required Another rule which Gage point ed out requires that copies of all eviction notices sent tenants also must he sent to the local area rent office within 24 hours. Persons with serious eviction problems arising before the local office is staffed and which can not be deferred, are advised to write the nearest rent control of fice, at Corvallis, for the attention of the Rent Attorney. Problems which can wait, however, should be withheld until the rent control office is established. Many ques tions on all phases of rent con trol mav be answered from the Question and Answer Booklet on Rent Control, which may be se cured at the Roseburg War Price and Rationing board.
