DEPARTMENT PRESIDENT VISITS AUXILIARY IN ROSEBURG FRIDAY NIGHT About 40 members of George Starmer camo and auxiliary, United Spanish War Veterans, attended a 6:30 dinner, Friday evening at the I. O. O. F. hall, in honor of Mrs. Lolo Skelly, de partment president of the auxil iary. The long tables were beau tifully decorated with choice flowers from the Elsie Wright gardens. After the dinner the camp and auxiliary held regular meetings, later joining to hear an address by Mrs. Skelly. This was the annual official visit of the de partment president to the local auxiliary. By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER GOLDA PARKER WICKHAM HONORED AT CHARMING TEA SATURDAY AFTERNOON In compliment to Mis. Golda Parker Wickham, dean of women at the University of Oregon, the University of Oregon Mothers club entertained at a very charm ing tea Saturday afternoon at the attractive home of the presi dent, Mrs. Len B. Fishbaek, on South Kane street. This annual spring tea is sponsored by the club to assist the scholarship loan fund and this year will aid in furnishing a room at the me morial building on the university campus. Gorgeous bouquets of yellow and white were used about the rooms, while the university col ors of yellow and green were carried out with the addition of green maline bows on the bou quets. The tea table, covered by an exquisite lace cloth, as cen tered with a modernistic ar rangement of yellow daffodils, white iris, China roses, lurge green tapers in white holders. The decorations were arranged bv Mi's. Velle Broadway Mrs. II. O. Pargeter and Mrs. L. W. Josse. Mrs. Len B. Rishback Mrs. H. T. Hansen and Mrs. L. E. Mc Clintock, officers of the club, graciously received the guests, who were presented to the guest of honor, Mrs. Wickham. Invited to pour during the tea hours included: Mrs. C. H. Wick ham and Mrs. Hugh Whipple (mother-in-law and sister-in-law of the guest of honor) ; Mrs. Paul Elliot, Mrs. Fred A. Knight, Mrs. Charles A. Brand, Mrs. R. L. Whipple, Mrs. Washington Hughes, Mrs. John E. Runyan, Mrs. Roy O. Young. Assisting about the rooms were: Mrs. J. F. Dillard. Mrs. W. H. The .entertainment was in charge of Mrs. Carl E. Wim berly, Miss Patricia McClintock, Miss Cecelia Wat.lg, Mrs. Eugene Powell and Mrs. T. C. Fitzgerald. Publicity was in charge of Mrs. J. F. Dillard. Many friends of Mrs. Wickham called during the afternoon, as she is very well known in Rose burg, having formerly been a Douglas county teacher. She has been prominent in educational work -for a , number of years and her year as dean of women at the University of Oregon has been very successful. Mrs. Wick ham gave a splendid talk on her work at the university and told of whirr is 'expected of the young women students. Members of the Roseburg senior and junior High schools were asked as guests to hear Mrs. Wickham's talk. Walter Naff sane, "Sylvia." by Ole Speaks and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," accompanied by his wife, the former Rose Marv Fish back, who nlayed the following piano selections: "Romane Sibe lius"; "Danse Americaine," by Mowrey; "Humoresque - Negre," by Grunman; "Crescendo." by Lasson: "Golliwogg's Cake Walk" by DeBussy. and "Caprice Vicn nois," by Fritz Kreisler. Mis. Gordon Stewart played the fol lowing piano selections on the program: "Dance-Caprice" and "Nocturn in C Major," by Greig, "Mazurka," by Chopin; "Valse," by Brahms, "Romance Sans Pa roles," by Saint-Saens and "The Rosary," by Nevin. The tea and program was one of the finest and most charming events of the season. D. A. R. MEETING IS HELD AT BOOTH HOME MONDAY AFTERNOON The D. A. R. met Monday after noon with Mrs. Edwin Booth on the Country Club road with Mrs. George M. Brown, regent, pre siding. The meeting opened with the pledge to the flag and sing ing of the national anthem. The secretary's report was given by Mrs. Walter Monger. The afternoon's program on the- topic, "Hymns of Our Churches," was very interest ingly presented by Mrs. W. M. Campbell, program chairman. At the tea hour Mrs. Booth served lovely refreshments to: Mrs. George M. Brown, Mrs. W. M. Campbell, Mrs. Douglas Waite, Mrs. Washington Hughes, Mrs. C. L. Branton, Mrs. D. N. Buscn bark, Mrs. F. H. Churchill, Mrs. William Anderson and Mrs. Wal ter Monger. The club will hold its annual election of officers at the May 21 meeting to be held at 7:30 o'clock in evening at the home of Mrs. E. B. MEETING WEDNESDAY Mrs. Fred J. Tooze. Jr.. Port land, state president of the W. C.! T. U., paid her official visit to the W. C. T. U. at a very interesting meeting at the First Presbyter ian church Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Len B. Fishbaek led the song service and accompanied Mrs. R. D. Knigge, who sang, "Draw Nigh to God", followed by the devotion on "Prayer" by Dr. Morris H. Roach. Mrs. Annie L. Russell, presi dent of the Roseburg W. C. T. U., graciously introduced the state president, Mrs. Tooze, and Mrs. Arthur Marsh, Lookinfglass, Dou"ln;s countv W. , C. T 1 U.j president, and Mrs. G. A. Spen dent. Mrs. Tooze fjave an address on the "Phases of national and state legislation." The afternoon's pro gram closed with the showing of pictures of recreational activities at the Childrens Farm Home of Corvallis. Lovely refreshments were ser ved at the tea hour by Mrs. George M. Brown, chairman, as sisted bv W. C. T. U. members of the Presbyterian church. A beautiful hand crocheted lac cloth covered the table, which was centered with lavender and gold spring flowers and tall yel low tapers. Oriental hand painted china from Canton. China, was used. FORMER ROSEBURG ARTIST SHOWS MURALS IN EXHIBIT AT ASTORIA Mrs. Betty McCrait Morrison, formerly of Roseburg, entertain ed Saturday afternoon from four lo six o'clock at a party at the Amato's Supper club in Astoria, when she invited 100 friends to preview the murals she painted for the club. Mrs. Morrison hns gained- national recognition for her paintings In Roseburg. She is a past president of the Roseburg Woman's club. The murals, which are painted in oil, supported hy 13 carved and painted glass cove corners, are Indirectly lighted. The painted glass is done by a special glaze process and is very colorful. A se ries of mermaid adventures lends interest to the undersea details. One mermaid helps release a fish from a hook while another peeks into a Davy Jones locker. Two Astoria girls posed for the mer maids.
