J. ixmey on fourin avenue weu nesday. Contract bridge was In play during the evening with high score prize going to Mr. and Mrs. Lloya! Stearns and low to Mrs. Robertson. A lovely gift was presentd by the group to Mr. and Mrs. Holcombe with Mrs. Harry Stearns making the presenta tion. J. Loney. REBEKAH LODGE MEETING IS HELD SUTHERLIN Sutherlin Re bekah lodge met last Thursday in fly parlors of the Methodist uftjrch. The meeting was opened by the noble grand; Mrs. Vesta Thomas. Communications were read and placed on file and other business was transacted. The next meeting will be a social affair and it is hoped a good many of our members and other members living In our comunity will at tend. Members present were: Mrs. Pearl Harvey, Mrs. Harriet Stearns, Mrs. Charlotte Parker Mrs. Hazel Green, Mrs. Margaret Medley, Mrs. Vesta Thomas, Mrs. Minnie Hartshorn, and Mrs. Ade laide Cooper. MRS. Alma Anderson on the Pacific highway about one-half mile south ofj town. The table was very pretty with its beautiful lace cover with a lovely centerpiece of fall flow- eICovers were placed for: Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Hartshorn, Miss Frieda Schaefer, Mr. and Mis. Anton Coenenberg and son, Dick ie, and the hostess, Mrs. Ander son. . The afternoon was spent in visiting. Mrs. Coenenberg was presented with some very lovely gifts. SOUTH UMPQUA LADIES rklTCDTAtMCn .Mrs. Marie Evane entertained ipe South Umpqua Ladies club at her lovely new mountain home on Thursday, rne lames khuicu for the Red Cross and sewed for the club's coming bazaar which will be held in the late fall. Refreshments were served by the hostess to the following mem bers: Mesdames Edna Mae Jones, Alice Poole, Edith Matthews, Lou ise Weseman. R1VERSDALE GRANGE TO HOLD SOCIAL SATURDAY Riversdale grange will hold a social affair at the hall Saturday evening, Sept. 23, at 9 o'clock. All members and their invited guests are asked to attend. Patterson to carry out a pretty motif for the one o'clock lunch eon, which she gave at here love ly home about one mile east of Sutherlin for the Sew and Chat ter club last Wednesday. TWINS ARE HONORED ON BIRTHDAY SATURDAY SUTHERLIN Honoring the second birthday anniversary of her twin nephews, David and Danny Dulley, Mrs. Fred Holle mon entertained at a six o'clock dinner at her home on Fourth avenue, last Saturday. A large beautifully decorated birthday cake was served with the dinner. Covers were Dlaced for David and Danny, honor guests, Garry Dullev, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Dul- lev. PICNIC IS ENJOYED BY CHRISTIAN CHURCH MEMBERS MONDAY SUTHERLIN Members of the Christian church and their families and friends enjoyed a delightful picnic on Monday at the Fair Oaks picnic grounds. A potluck dinner was enjoyed at noon. The men folks worked on the new Christian church during the day. At noon they joined the crowd and enjoyed a bountiful dinner. - .The afternoon was ,spent, in gSmesRri other amusements.'' Beverly Pope won both prizes in the swimming contest. Patsy Wahl and Dolores Martin won the three-legged race for girls and Maurice Vogelpohl, Jr., and Bruce Pope for the boys. Dick Firman won the 100 yard and 50 yard dash. Manual Arts At Junior High Adds To Teacher Staff Record enrollment in manual arts at the Roseburg Junior high school has made it necessary to transfer Harry E. Wilson, trades coordinator, to full-time work in the trades and industry depart ment of Roseburg Senior high school, Paul S. Elliott, city school superintendent, reported today. Enrollment in the trades and in dustries classes is more than double that ot any previous year, Elliott said. The superintendent announced that the district has been fortu nate in securing the services of Peter Gretsch, whose wife, Mrs. Melba Gretsch, is employed as instructor in the first grade at Benson school, to serve as in structor in manual arts at the Junior high school. Mrs. Gretsch sought employ ment in the Roseburg schools to be near her husband who until recently was employed in south ern Oregon with the state game department. Because of the need for additional instructors In the Roseburg school, however, Mr. Gretsch has resigned from the game department arid will en gage in shop and classroom work. He is a graduate of Oregon Col lege of Education at Monmouth, was a student at Willamette uni versity and was graduated from Oregon State college. He served four years as principal of the junior high school at Toledo. He was a star on the football team at Ridgefield, Wash., high school, and played on varsity teams at Monmouth and Willamette. Be cause of his football experience and training, he has been ap pointed to assist Mel Ingram, ath letic coach, with football training in the high school. Supt Elliott also reported em ployment of Mrs. E. T. Garrett to teach In the second grade' at Benson school. Mrs. Garrett for merly taught at Valsetz and St. Helens and was on the school staff at Springfield last year. Cordon Introduces Bill For Mooring Basin WASHINGTON. Cordon (R-Ore), an amendment to the rivers and har bors bill authorizing a survey of the Columbia slough, Astoria, Ore., with a view to construction of a mooring basin for fishing boats within the harbor. .
