Smith River Job Again Urged On U.S. Government REEDSPORT Members of the Port of Umpqua commission, in its regular monthly meeting in this city last Monday, petition ed the commerce committee of the United States senate, through Senator Guy Cordon, a member of the committee requesting a re view of a former project adverse ly reported on during the sec ond session of the 73rd congress. The project concerns improve ment of Smith river, In Douglas county, by dredging and other Improvements to navigation. At that time the committee decided that owing to conditions this im provement was not necessary. Considerable change In those conditions are noticeable at this time as the Smith river has shoals in places and boats which distribute mail to the residents on the river find that their prog gross is becoming more habardous. The sanl- is said of boats carry ing school children to and from their homes and school and of boats carrying freight and prod ucts on this river to and Horn market. The government owns a vast amount of timber in this region and lo make it. as well as pri vately owned timber, available to market, log rafts on Smith river must be used. A number of log ging companies are operating in this area cutting logs for the mills at Gardiner and Reedsport and they are finding it difficult to float these logs to market on account of river iihoals. Immed dlate Improvement of the river by the government is quite neces sary.
