He mice foueht acainst the United States as a lieutenant of the insurrectionist Aguinaldo, but lived to see this natiqn become the champion of his native land. He struggled valiantly against encroaching death that he might 'once again return. to his 'people, carrying the banner of national independence. Although he fought in the insurrection, his battles were .not primarily againpt the United States but were rather against any forces which would curtail the freedom of the Philippines. ' He never rested from that fight. He was elected president of the first insular senate In 1916, and when the Philippines were established as a commonwealth by congressional act. signed in March, 1934, he became the first president; taking oiltce in 1935, -with the definite pledge of full independence in 1945. ... One of President, Quezon's; first official acts' was to en trust to General Douglas MacArthur the establishment of military defenses. The brilliance with which that task was performed is one of the brightest pages of the history of the current war, yet one of the blackest blots upon the record of the United States. For, had we provided adequate weapons and materiel, the courage, daring and strategical genius dis played by MacArthur and his gallant forces might have saved the Philippines and avoided the tragedies of Bataan and! Corregidor. But MacArthur has not surrendered his assignment. President Quezon must have died happy in the thought that m his choice of a military leader he had been guided to select one who would remain true to his trust. ' For MacArthur. surely, is on his way back to the Philippines.' larawa, Saipan, Guam, New Guinea, Tinian, and Sansa- por, have been great victories, establishing firmly the repu tation for American feats of arms. But they are more than that. They are stepping stones to the Philinnines. Thousands of men have died because we failed to listen to, the pleas of Manuel Quezon and General MacArthur that we provide suitable defenses for the" cornrnonwealth Irrthe Pacific. We have have paid heavily for our failure to for tify Guam. But we are winning back the territory lost through our past failures and soon will be in a position to redeem the land Quezon loved so dearly. Quezon was promised Philippine independence in 1943. There is every indication that pledge will be fulfilled. The blood off American soldiers will mark the path. The cost in lives will exceed that required to win our ow n indepen dence from Great Britain. But we have every assurance to believe the promise made in 1935 will be executed 'on. time' and the wasted mortal remains of the brave little Filipino president will iinally rest in the soil of a free land. To get there, they jumped '21)0 miles from Noenifoor Island, in the Schoutens. At Sunsapoor, they are only about 600 miles from the southernmost Philippines. A spokesman for our side calls this the last operation of the New Guinea campaign. "We now con trol the whole northern New Guinea coast," he adds.
