KRU8E An interesting meeting ot the Melrose Homo Economics club was enjoyed at the home of Mrs. W. L. Kruse Wednesday after noon. The rooms were attractive ly decorated with bouquets of sweetpeas and chiffon daisies. Plans were discussed for hav ing the annual grange picnic the first meeting night in August. Definite action was left for the members at the next grange meeting. Mrs. Dt N. Busenbark and Mrs. R. A. Busenbark were appointed as hostesses for the refreshments Tuesday evening. Sewing and visiting were en joyed during the afternoon. Dainty refreshments were serv ed by Mrs. Kruse to: Mrs. Jerry Horn, guest, Mrs. R. A. Busen bark, Mrs. Jay Young, Mrs. L. Dlnley, Mrs. Joel Fenn, Mrs. James Conn, Mrs. E. R. Fenn, Mrs. J. F. Bonebrake, Mrs. O. O. Matthews, Mrs. D. N. Busenbark and Mrs; H. D. Simmons, mem bers. The next meeting will be Au gust 9, at the home of Mrs. Joe Matthews. Members are asked to bring knitting needles and yarns for making squares for afghans. POTLUCK AFFAIR AT COUNTRY CLUB HONORS LELAND KENT WIMBERLY Leland Kent Wimberly, young est son of Judge and Mrs. Carl E. Wimberly, was honored at a de lightful potluck dinner Sunday at the Roseburg Country club. Covers were placed for Judge and Mrs. Wimberly and Leland; Mr; and Mrs. L. E. McCllntock and daughters, Miss Patricia and Miss Nancy; Mrs. Guy Cordon and daughter, Mrs. Plin Lau rence; Mrs. Allen Cordon; Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Pengra, Con gressman and Mrs. Harris Ells worth and Miss Jean Turner. Leland left Wednesday for Cal ifornia to be sent later to Ama- rilla, Texas, to take his basic training as a fighter pilot in the U. S. air forces. Mr. Smith is a de scendant of the historical Meri wether Lewis family. The silver for this dinner has been in the family for several generations. Pur chased from the city's street equipment reserve fund, the sweeper was bought after inspec tions of various types. Shipped to Portland by the manufactur ers, the Municipal ' Supply Co., South Bend, Ind., the machine was demonstrated by the distri butors, Nelson Equipment Co., Portland, at Portland, Salem, Al bany and Corvallis while en route to Roseburg. The machine is built to sweep along gutters, after pavements have been flushed. Roseburg Camp Fire Council to Meet A very important meet ing of tho Roseburg Camp Fire council will ot held Monday eve ning, July 24, at 7:30 ln the R. L. Whipple office. All guardians and assistants are urged to be present if possible. Returns to Camp Private Lovcll Baker returned Friday night to Fort Bragg, North Caro lina, after a ten-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Baker, 821 West Lane. Pvt. Baker is instructor in bayon et tactics. Will Report For Duty Bill Chalmers, seaman 1c, U. S. navy, left Friday afternoon for Mare island to report for duty. He has been stationed in Alaska and has spent the last 25 days on leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Chalmers, on South Pine street. Before entering thr service in November 19-12, he was an employee of the Roseburg News-Review. In Roseburg On Business T. It. Burgess, from the Portland of fice of the forest eservice, is making inspection of lumbering and forest protection activities in Douglas county, including both the territory under the supervis ion of the state and that of the forest service. Mr. Burgess has been staying with Fred South wick, chief fire warden for the Douglas Fire Protective associa tion. Leaves For Portland Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Wells and daugh ter, Mary Carol, have left for their home in Portland, follow ing a week's visit in Roseburg with Mr. Wells' parents, Mr. and Mis. Harvey R. Wells, and sister, Kathleen, and other relatives and friends. Mr. Wells is a "lead man" in tho Swan Island shipyard. They returned north via the "roast route and wero accompanied by Mr. Wells' sister. First Lieuten ant Susan Wells Sherman, w hose headquarters arc at the A. A. F. W. T. T. C. in Denver, and who visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey R. Wells, and sister, Kathleen, here on her furlough. Following a short stay In Port land, she will return to Denver. Visits in Sutherlin Mrs. Gladys Cloud and son Richard, sweepings in a three-fourths cubic yard hopper. A front spray prevents dust-from the sweeping operation. The machine has only one wheel in the rear, giving it a very short turning radius. All controls are hydraulically operat ed from the driver's compart ment, making it possible for one man to do the work formerly re quiring three employees. The speed at which sweeping can be conducted will permit cleaning of from 15 to 20 miles daily out of the approximately 60 miles of paved gutters to be covered. The street department, Super intendent Frew reports, has been badly handicapped by the labor shortage, and the new machine will permit a much more effi cient job of cleaning, at the same time preventing dust damage in the business area. of Salem, visited with Mrs. Cloud's sister and family in Su therlin, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Rose during the past week. Richard i f ports that his father, Lynn Cloud, who is with the U. S. en gineers, stationed at Nome, Alas ka, will be returning to the states in a few months after a year of service in Alaska and the Aleu tian islands. Gasoline Ration Liberalized For Furlough Period A new policy on granting gas oline rations to members of the armed services on leave or fur lough was announced today by McDanncl Brown, district OPA director. Effective July 25, 19-14, a mem ber of the armed services on leave or furlough for a period of three days or more will be en titled to one gallon of ctisoline tor each day of his leave or fur-1 lough up to a maximum of 30 gallons. The new rule replaces one granting a flat five gallons to every member of the armed services on leave, furlough or pass, regardless of the length of the leave.
