Sotii and CluhA By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER PICNIC CELEBRATED ON UMPQUA R1VSR A Fourth of July picnic was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Trussell and brother, El dred Trussell, on the bank of the Umpqua river. Relatives and friends gathered at the home to meet Corporal Floyd Epperly, re cently from the Southwest Paci fic, a son of Mrs. Trussell. The large tables were spread under the beautiful cherry trees with a red, while and blue color scheme carrying out the decora tions. After the one o'clock bas ket dinner was served, boating, swimming, fishing, card playing, and visiting were enjoyed until a ' late hour, , when Mrs. Trussell served ice cream, assisted by Mrs. Lester Adams and Mrs. Guy Day. SERVICE FLAG DEDICATION AT OLALLA JULY 4 , Mrs. George Rattiff and Mrs. Arwell Muetzel presented a conv munlty service flag at an impres sive dedication at the Meutzel picnic ground July 4. The dedica tion was by Dr. Charles A. Ed wards. The flag was made by the Busy Steppers and is composed ol 43 stars representing the boys and girls from the two Olalla school districts. There are 21 sil ver stars, one gold star and 21 blue stars. The picnic of the afternoon was sponsored by the Busy Steppers Olalla Women's club, and ' ice cream was served. Estelle Smith, 83, vet eran army nurse, died at her home, 614 S. Jackson St., in Rose burg, Saturday nl?ht. Following nurses training at the Good Sa maritan hospital, Portland, she entered army service, Aug. 16, 1899, and served at the Presidio of San Francisco from March to July 1900, when she was assigned to the Philippines. She spent two weeks in Taku harbor, Tiensien, China during the Boxer rebellion, while the harbor was being shell ed. Following service in the Phil ippines, she returned to the Unit ed States and was located at Fort Bayard N. M. and at The Persldio before making a second trip to the Islands, where she was locat- ed at Manila. Since her retirement she has made her home in Roseburg. Funeral services will be held 8 1 the Episcopal church at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday, conducted by Fa ther Blaker. Interment will fol low In the I. O. O. F. cemetery. (API Baker, Klamath, Josephine and Union counties have fulfilled their "E" bond quotas in the fifth war loan campaign, state- war ' finance headquarters reported to-' day. , The campaign ended Saturday' midnight with Oregon and the nation well over total quotas. But : sales to Individuals in this state' were approximately 45 per cent I under the goal set.
