His wife, the former Lois Anne Byrd, and their daughter, Patricia Sue, are remaining in Roseburg for a longer visit with Mrs. Levy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Byrd. Knight of Portland has arrived in Roseburg to spend his vacation and to join his wife, the former Lota Hatfield, and their . son, Philip, and twin daugh ters, Jeanne and Joanne, who have been here several weeks visiting Mrs. Knight's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry F Hatfield. Attorney Knight is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Knight of Roseburg. Knight, and other reia tives and friends. They were ac companied back to Eugene by Mrs. Houser's brother-in-law and sister, Special M. "Bud" Watson, U. S. navy, and his wife, the for mer Marjorle Knight, who, have been spending their leave in Roseburg with the latter's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Knight. The Watsons will spend a day in Eu gene before returning to their home in Seattle. (AP) When Sacretary of the Treas ury Morgenthau was charged 19 cents for a sandwich at a Chi cago lunch counter recently, and protested at a subsequent press conference that the price was ex cessive, he apparently got results. The treasury said today It had received word that the same lunch counter now is selling sandwiches for a dime. Gene E. Arthur, Happy Valley route, Roseburg, has been grad uated from the sanitary techni cian school, army service forces, according to a report from the training center at Camp Grant, 111. Visiting In Roseburg Mrs. Dp los Richardson and daughter, Mary Dee, of Coquille are visiting at the home of the latter's pater nal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Richardson, on East Lane street,' and with other relatives and . friends. Mr. Richardson is somewhere in the South Pacific war area. Mrs. Sawyers Home Mrs. James E. Sawyers has returned to her home in Roseburg, follow ing a visit In Corvallis with her nephew, LL Jack Kidder, and his wife and baby son. Mrs. Sawyers was accompanied home by Lts and Mrs. Kidder and baby, who will spend a week here visiting. The Kidder family formerly made their home here. School Units Urged to Fill Teaching Staffs SALEM, Ore., July 5 (API- School districts were urged by the state department of public in- Istruction today to complete their teaching staffs for the next school year as soon as possible in order to avoid a teacher shortage. - D. A. Emerson, assistant state education superintendent, said the shortage might be the worst in history. ; During the school year just closed, more than 100 teaching assignments were unfilled, and more than 1,000 teachers were temporary, having special emer gency teaching certificates. The state has 8,000 teachers. . Will Report for Duty TS Wil liam Ray Roberts left this morn ing for his base at' San Diego, Calif., . following a 30-day leave. He spent two weeks at Silverton visiting his mother, Mrs. Bob Marshall, and the last two weeks in Roseburg with other relatives. He was accompanied here by his mother, who will visit until to morrow with her mother, Mrs. Minnie Noyer, when she will re turn to Silverton. They are Lieut. Max Louis Weinberg, 23, pilot, whose wife, Ann, resides in Klamath Falls; Stephen Warnick, aviation radio man 2C, of Whitney, Pa., and Jo seph Peter Casterot, 20, aviation machinist's mate 3C, of Bakers field, Calif. Pvt. Stanley E. Jantzer of Azalea has been transferred from Fort Lewis, Wash., to Camp Walters, Texas, according to word received by his wife, Mrs, Stanley Jantzer. He Is to receive 17 weeks of basic training at his new station. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis E. Jones of Roseburg have received word that their son, Lewis E. Jones, Jr., A. O. M. 2c, U. S. navy, has recently undergone an ap pendectomy. He is reported to have suffered an acute attack of appendicitis while at work at his hangar and was rushed to the navy hospital for the operation Mrs. James E. Judd has re ceived word that her husband, P. F. C. James E. Judd, has ar rived with the U. S. army forces in New Guinea. He was with the Judd Furniture company store in Roseburg before entering the army. He is the son of Mrs. James M. Judd of this city. His wife and baby daughter, Virginia, are making their home tempor arily in Roseburg. Miss Farn ham came home on the Grip sholm after being in a Japanese internment camp. Fire in Used Lumber Causes No Damage The Roseburg fire department was called late Monday after noon to extinguish a grass fire at Pine and Lane streets. The blaze had set fire to a pile of used lumber. No damage result ed. - - . Henry Armstrong Drops Verdict to John Thomas LOS ANGELES. July 5 (AP) Twenty-one-year-old John Thomas battered his way to a unanimous decision and revenge last night In a furious encounter with former triple tltleholder Henry Armstrong, 10 years his senior.
