S. C. commencement exercises Sat urday, at which time the Rath key's son, Arthur, received his master of arts degree in bio chemistry. He taught chemis try at the college the last year while working for his master's degree. Since January, he has been a student at the University of Oregon Medical school In Port land. C, she attended radio operators' school at Miami university, Oxford, Ohio. A graduate of Roseburg high school and the University of Oregon, the marine woman en listed in the marine corps In May, 1943. A brother, Bert Shoemaker, is in the. army air corps. ' Returns Home Mrs. Elsie Hughes has left for her home in Springfield, Ore., following a visit In Tenmile with her mother, Mrs. Emma Swift. Softball Practice Cancelled The girls softball team practice, scheduled for tonight, has been postponed until June 27, at 7 p. m. at Finlay field. Returns to Portland Mrs. D. B. Schroeder returned Monday to her home in Portland following a weekend visit with her daugh ter, Mrs. Harold J. Hickerson, 617 Cobb street, Roseburg. Visits Over Weekend Bruce Mellis from Camp Abbott, Bend, Ore., spent the weekend at his home on Glenn street in Rose burg. Invasion Boosts Need of Women in Naval Service Return to Medford Mr. Mrs. Harry Grimm and son, Jlmmle Dale, have returned to their home in Medford, following a trip to Roseburg to attend the funeral of Mr. Grimm's mother. The family formerly resided here. t Will Go to Portland Miss Su zanna and Miss Sally Hahn of Roseburg expect to leave on the midnight train tonight for Port land to visit their mother, Mrs. Helen Hahn. The two make their home In Roseburg with their maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Nickson. William E. Bell, navy recruit ing officer, will be In Roseburg June 23 and 24, with headquar ters at the chamber of commerce office. Maximum Prices Set For Contract Logging WASHINGTON, June 20. Maximum prices for contract logging services In western Unit ed States, effective June 24. will be established at the price paid January 11, the OPA announc ed yesterday. The action applies to the area west of the 100th meridian, a line running north and south between north Dakota and Texas. The frozen price, said OPA, Is equivalent to current levels In most of the area covered. headquarters said. Toward the eastern flank of the long Normandy front, Brit ish forces battling against a wall of nazi armor struck two miles southwest of Tilly-Sur-Seulles and seized Hottot-Les-Bagues. While the Americans were steadily marking up new gains the British on their sector to ward the eastern end of the beachhead once again drove the Germans from Tilly-Sur-Seulles, which has changed hands several times. The American wedge across the Cherbourg peninsula now is 16 miles at its widest point and eight miles at its narrowest. Ex panding to the north Lt. Gen. Bradley's Yankees are now rac ing rapidly toward the main Ger man defense line six miles south of the port It was expected that a matter of hours would show the strength of these defenses and whether the Germans can manage to turn the muzzles of the port's long range guns from the sea to re pel a land attack. The German-held channel Is lands have guns capable of shoot ing to the Cherbourg peninsula at extreme range, but headquar ters said there is no reason to believe "they can seriously inter fere with the American advance." Nazis Badly Disorganized V j German troops all along the north front were reported appar ently badly disorganized. Front dispatches declared many of the high nazi officers had been killed and in some sectors units had been cut to pieces. No gains were reported In the Carentan area to the south and it seemed apparent that Bradley was content merely with holding actions there while driving all out for Cherbourg. Despite the worst weather In days, American fighters and fighter-bombers swung into the fray in considerable numbers, sweeping along the few roads left the Germans around Cher bourg and cutting their military Frances Lintott Named Star's Grand Musician Frances Lintott, a past worthy matron of the Roseburg chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, has returned to Roseburg from Port land, where she attended grand chapter meeting last week.
