AND VOICE RECITAL, f GIVEN ON FRIDAY ' ' On Friday evening, June 2, Miss Gladys Strong presented a group of Junior and intermediate pupils In a piano recital. They were assisted by two voice pu pils of Mrs. Charles A. Brand. The program was very interest ing. Quite varied stages of prog ress were represented as inter mediate students as well as little beginners, who have studied only a few weeks, played. Their play ing was musical, having good tone and rythm and showed high ideals of work. Mrs. Brand's pupils who are be ginners, have good voices and sang pleasingly with good tone quality. Mrs. Brand presented Marilyn Preston and Willene Luellan. BURMA" end WEST" EVEL"I1 AKKERS ROSEBURG WRITERS CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING AT HOUCK HOME A most enjoyable meeting was held by the Roseburg Writers club Friday night at the home of Doctor and Mrs. George E. Houck. The evening was spent In fea turing (he hobbles of the various members. Mr. C, L. Farrar, spe cial agent, Investigations Divi sion, Department of the Interior, gave a most interesting talk on precious and semi-precious gems, their source and production, and displayed samples of the types . found In the United States. He al-1 so spoke on his unique hobby of t cuuccuiig uiu ciocks, wuicn was very entertaining. Mrs. Marjorie Hunt Pettit and Carl F. Spaulding discussed stamp collecting as a hobby and displayed several interesting and beautifully, arranged volumes. Miss Mary Ann Bowman of Clendale, Oregon, discussed her many and varied hobbies. Mrs. Vernon V. Harpham displayed some old daguerreotype and tin type photographs in antique set tings, and Mrs. Hilda Peterson exhibited her hatpin collection and spoke briefly on her hobby of gold-panning for fun. Mrs. Houck displayed some buttons from, her large and well assorted collection, and also her coin collection which includes many modern and antique for eign coins, with a special collec tion of coins from the so-called "lost countries." Doctor Houck demonstrated his hobby of wood-working and very graciously displayed his n.any beautifully wrought pieces including a lovely grandfather clock, Indo-C h I n e s e what-not (French colonial pattern), and some occasional tables, together with an antique secretarial desk and organ which were shipped around the Horn by pioneers, which he has recently renovated. Because of the wide variety of hobbies represented and the ac tive Interest demonstrated, It was decided to have one or more meetings devoted annualy exclu sively to hobbles. The Oilako group of the Camp Fire Girls was organized at the home of Mrs. Robert Le Bleu -Wednesday, June 7.
