A- CARNIVAL IS SUf CfSFUL AFFAIR The Rose school carnival was held Friday evening at the Rose school E. S. Hall reported was very well attended and a de cided success! The P. T. A. served refreshments' of pop and Ice cream to the group. 'The enter tainment included the' school chorus; Doll Shop," by Mrs. Mes Ick's first grade; skit by the fifth grade, "Good Health is What Does It," musical score by fourth grade; dances by 2nd and 3rd grades; play, "Pollyanna", by 6th grade; (lag drill by Miss Caroth crs' first graders, and song "God Bless America." ' " CIRU SCOUTS TO COLLECT MAGAZINES SUTHERLIN The Girl Scouts arc planning to collect magazines for the soldiers, beginning Mar. 20, Monday, If you have any magazines' to contribute, please have them collected in a pile and in a handy place and the girls will pick them up. "Life, Colliers, Westerns, Comic books, Mechanic1 magazines, Reader's Digest, etc., will be taken. All must be In good condition. SEWING GROUP HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING SUTHERLIN The Sewing II girls of the 4-H met last Thurs day afternoon. They have com pleted their pot holders and are now working on their towels. Next Thursday, they are going to have a St. Patrick's party at noon in the Arts building. GLENGARY SEWING CLUB TO MEET ON THURSDAY The Glengmy Sewing club will meet Thursday at the home of Mrs. T. J. SURPRISE PARTY IS DELIGHTFUL AFFAIR GLENDALE A surprise party honoring Herman Grouscman on his seventy-fourth birthday, was given Wednesday evening at his home in Glendale. An attractive airangement of jonquils and violets formed the centerpiece. The evening hours were very pleasantly spent in visiting. A beautifully decorated birth day cake was cut by the guest of honor' and a delightful buffet slipper was enjoyed by the guest of honor, Mr. Grouscman, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and daughters, Patty and Mary, Mr. Harold E. Griswold of Grants Pass, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Denzer and grand daughter, Gretchen Breuer of Los Angeles, Arthur Wagner, Frank Williams, Mrs. Sally Wil son, Mrs. Hattie Vaughn, Fred Pruitt and Mrs. Grouscman. OAKLAND STUDENT ON HONOR ROLL UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eugene, Mar. 21 (special) Mary jane Rees, Oakland, senior in mu sic, was one of 107 university students who made the honor roll for the winter term with grade point averages of 3.50 or better. A total of 1738 students were enrolled at the university for the winter term! according to figures released from the registrar's cv lice. Miss Rees Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Rees, Oak land. MARY LUCILLE PLOSS PLEDGED TO SORORITY UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eugene, Mur. 21 (special) Mary Lucllc Ploss, Koscburg, freshman in Juislc, was pledged to Alpha Delta Pi, women s soror ity, late last week. She was one of 15 university women on the campus who were pledged after a short three-day rush period at the beginning of spring term. Miss Ploss Is the dnughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Ploss, Rose burg. GARDENING CLUB IS ORGANIZED SUTHERLIN The Gardening club of the 4-H, organized with nineteen children sinning up for victory gardening. Mrs. R. Gar- man and Mrs. Aldropp met Tues day at theformor's home and di vided the club In two groups as there were too many for one. Mrs. Carman will take one group and Mrs. Aldropp the other. They plan on having their first ! meeting next week and at thai I time they will elect their offi-1 ccrs. After enjoying Ice cream and birthday cake, the group attend ed the show, "Let's Face It." COURT OF AWARDS HELD BY GIRL SCOUTS SUTHERLIN The Girl Scout Court of Awards was held Sunday at the school gymnasium. Assist ed by the Boy Scouts, the girls gave their Hag ceremony follow ed by demonstrating in first aid ;-nd signalinc. Mrs. William Schaieh gave an interesting talk on What .Scouting Can Do Help the Children of the Com munity." Scout Leader Lvla Chcnoweth presented the merit badges assisted by Troon Coun selor Tholma Brunello. Girls re ceiving their second class badges were: Barbara Schairh, Acnes Pleuard, Myrtle Wils - i, Virginia Norris, Leanne McCiv -. y, Eve lyn Garman, Jean Ritehey, Patsy Lou Walil. HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING The Women's Society of Chris tian Service met at the home of Mrs. Fred Buell on Wednesday with a potluck dinner. The house was beautifully dee orated with anemones and daffo dils. Mrs. Cordelia Smith, presi dent, presided with the following members present: Emily Fos back, Carol Horehcr, Gladys John son, Virginia Liuirnncc, Hertha Hummel, Mary Schullz, Bonnie Zellar, Virginia Weis, Floyce Wilson, Effle lreton, Itosie Owen, Lena Herliendt, Helen Buell. LOOKINGGLASS For their March meeting the ladies of the Woman's Society of Christian Service met in an all day meeting at the home of Mrs. O, G. Rogers. The day was spent in tying and completing quilts for the Manley Community Center of Portland. A potluck dinner was enjoyed at noon and a short business ses sion held in the afternoon, con ducted by the president, Mrs. A. A. Jacoby. The devotions were led by Mrs. Marsh and prayer of fered by Mrs. Heard. The presi dent announced the appointment of committees including Mrs. Roy Buell, missionary chairman; Mrs. O. G. Rogers and Mrs. Mary Smith, work committee; Mrs. Wilson, Red Cross chairman, and Mrs. Echo Heard and Mrs. Roy Buell, social service chairmen. Mrs. Arthur- Marsh and Mrs. Chas. Green were appointed to purchase and send out Easter cards to the service men. A card of sympathy was signed by the members present and a floral gi ft ordered to be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Rodley in the loss of their son, Sgt. Orville Rodley, who was killed recently while serving with the armed forces in the Italian campaign. Mrs. Swift was welcomed as a new member of the society. Mrs. Green invited the group to meet at her home on April 5. Enjoying the meeting were: Mesdames, Green, Davis, Beck, Wilson, Heard, Edna Williams, Swift, Marsh, Smith, Alexander, Buell, Swan, Mary Jacoby, Howard, Hodges, Rogers, Ben Jacoby, H. B. Jacoby, Susie Oar and Story. PUBLIC DANCE TO BE HELD APRIL 1 SUTHERLIN To add to their building fund, the Girl and Boy Scout troops are giving their first public dance April 1 at the Su therlin school gymnasium. This will be open to anyone who cares to come, and there vill be old fashioned as well as modern dances. Potluck refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited. The slogan for the affair is: "Buy a Share in Sutherlin Youth Help the Boy and Girl Scout Troop." ' MR. AND MRS ANGST CELEBRATE FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY YONCALLA Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Angst celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their heme just south of Yoncalla Sun day, March 12." Mr. and Mrs. Angst were married March 14 at Waumandee Wis. They came to Yoncalla In 1916 locating where they now liye. They were blessed with seven children, most of whom were present at the cele bration. Mrs. Earl Howard ' of Norton, Mrs. J. W. Powell of Ba kersfield, Calif., R. L. Angst of Eugene, Mrs. Lester Leavitt, Jr., and Mrs. Walter Eccleston of Eu gene, Mrs. F. L. Johnson of Port land and O. W. Angst of Rose burg. They also, have 11 grand children and one great-grandchild.
