POETS CORNER
A WARTIME ROMANCE
By ALDEN HARNESS
Where sounds of human voices
Had never broke before
The all-prevailing silence
That brooded evermore
In mountain-sheltered valley
Which reached from shore to
shore,
Within a rock-ribbed cavern
In prehistoric style,
Two victims of a shipwreck
Dwelt on an unknown isle.
Where softest rain and sunshine
Beside the long lagoon
Brought forth a million blossoms
And ripened rich fruit soon,
With joy and health and gladness
Their young livens were in tune
From flint, which she discovered
Down In a deep defile,
He fashioned heads for arrows
Upon that fertile isle. '
War broke tho peace, pervading
That haven In the seas.
While bravest Yankee soldiers
Advanced through jungle trees
And fought the hordes,
: comprising
Twelve thousand Japanese.
lney searched Tor yellow snipers
And slew them mile on mile.
Till Nippon's beaten army
Fled from that tropic isle.
As sweet as matchless music
One hears on nights in June,
When over moonlit islands
The winds on mountains croon
Through green and fragrant
forests
Creation's mystic rune;
As radiant with beauty
As down's resplendent smile,
Became the love that found
them
Upon that lonely isle.
Go to Portland Mrs. Ed Bor
gen and daughter. Miss Wyona,
of this city, left today for Port
land to spend the weekend at
tending to business and visiting.
