Eisenhower Gets Full General Rank In Nomination WASHINGTON, Feb. 11. i AIM President Roosevelt today nominated Lieutenant General Dwlght D. Eisenhower to be a full general, coincident with I 'lime Minister Churchill's dis closure that allied forces oppos- ing me axis in noun ninui would lie unified under Eisenhow er's command. The promotion, expected to re ceive prompt approval by the sen ate, will make Eisenhower the fourth full general in the Ameri can forces, counting General John J. Mrs. Bernard Soar was called lo Portland the past week by the death of Mr. Saar's grandmother. .Mrs. Fred Richard substituted at school during Mrs. Saar's ab sence. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott and chil dren, Minnie, Dclmer and Anita, are leaving this week for Riddle where they will make their home. Athletic Coach Leaps to Death From Bridge TACOMA, Wash., Feb. 11. As his wife and two small sons looked on, Ernie E. Hannus, 3G. Athletic coach at Enumclaw high school, leaped to liU death yes terday from a bridge crossing the Carnonado river near Bur nett. Sheriff's Deputy Joe Karpach said the family were crossing the bridge in the Hannus car when the husband stopped the machine and walked to the rail ing. Mrs. Hannus said her husband had leen on the verge of a ner vous breakdown. The body was recovered about a half mile from the bridge. r O ooo CS Speaking Contest Dated At Nazarene Church The Loyal Tomierance legion speaking contest, which was re cently postponed, will be held Sunday, February 14, at 11 o' clock at the Nazarene church on East Douglas street. Contestants will compete for the bronze bar. The speaking contest is open to Ihe public. Yoncalla YONCALLA, Feb. 11 Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Phillips and daugh ter, Blllle Nadine, of Vancouver, Wash., visited at the Phillips home in Hayhurst valley over the week end. Mr. Phillips is leader man In the welding department. Mr. and Mrs. Lou Bruly of Van couver. Wash., Mrs. Walter Moore and Mrs.Sewell of Marsh field visited at the Dave Rogeis home over the week end. Wayn Phillips made a trip to Winchester Bay over the week end. Fannie Dell Phillips, lletly Jo Fullbright and Barbara Hon ser made the trip with him. They visited Lawrence Wayne Dupper, who' has been ill In the North Bend hospital with pneumonia. Mrs. H. Phillips has been con fined in-bed for the past three weeks with pneumonia. She is able to be up and around again. Chapman's mill is running steady again after being shut down due to bad weather conditions.- Mrs. Mirth Long left Wednes day for her home In Los Angeles after spending the past two weeks here visiting at the Lena Long home. Mr. and Mrs. John Weber have purchased the Lyons home Just west of town and will take pos session the first of March. Mi ami Mrs. Lyons will move to Kan sas to make their home. Loyd Means, who is with the U. S. army at Camp Adair, spent the week end here visiting his sister and family. Tom Wallace went to Eugene Sunday. Mrs. Kinghorn visited al the Lyons home recently enroute to Richmond, Calilf. Mrs, Minnie Lutz left Monday for Myrtle Point where she will spend the summer. Mr. and Mrs. A. G.
