Sis terhood will meet at one-fifteen o'clock Friday, October 2, at the home of Mrs. Homer Grow at 363 Cobb street. , Mrs. Ella B. Thurston Of Roseburg Passes Mrs. Ella B. Thurston, 75, wife of L. F. Thurston, of this city, died at her home late Tuesday. She was born in Montana March 24, 1867, "daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Blodgett, of Vermont. She was married to Mr. Thurston in Los Angeles November 20, 1894. Surviving are the husband; three sons, Leland F. Thurston of Gold Run, California; Ernest Thurston, Laguna Beach, Califor nia; Arthur Thurston, Eugene, Oregon; and one daughter, Ro zetta Thurston, of Camp Carson, Colorado. Mrs. Thurston was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church. Funeral announcement will be made later by the Douglas Fu neral home. 11 ' Local News Attending School Miss Joyce Vlerra Is muking her home with Mrs. D. H. Lennox and attending Junior high school. Delzell of Portland was a political visitor In Roseburg yesterday, stopping In the city for several hours en route to Medford. He Is working in behalf of Lew Wallace, demo cratic candidate for governor. Funeral Services Set For Dr. George J. Bacher Funeral services for the late Dr. George J. Bacher will be held tomorrow at 2 p. m. at the chapel of the Roseburg Undertaking company, with Rev. Charles A. Edwards officiating. Interment will follow In Masonic cemetery. Back From Vacation Mrs. Lena Slattery has returned to her work as deputy in the Doug las county sheriff's office, follow ing a vacation spent in Spokane, Wash., visiting relatives and friends. All women of the church and friends are invited to bring a gift or trin ket to be sent in the Christmas box to Mather school at Buford, S. C. Home on Furlough Milton Tavenor, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Tavenor of the Melrose dis trict, is home on furlough from the army. Tavenor has been suf fering from an attack of pneu monia and was recently released from the army hospital at Kansas City. He was granted an 18-day furlough at home durng his period of recuperation. Matier, above. Union Oil public relations representative. Matier is spending the day in Roseburg and will speak at the regular meeting ot the Roseburg Lions club tonight. A founder-member of the Pa cific 'Geographic society, Matier has had a personal interest in the planning of the road to Alas ka. In 1908, at the request of the Hon. Thomas Taylor, Cana dian minister of lands, Matier was a member of a party, led by the famous explorer and Indian linguist, Father Lejune, which surveyed the original British Co lumbia section of the highway. The department said there Is a severe shortage of milk cans, and it is almost impossible to get ma terials to make new ones. Officer Transferred Lieuten ant Charles R. Hager, who has been assisting Lieutenant J. T. Runyan, commanding officer, in the operation of the aircraft warning service at Roseburg, has been transferred from his post here. He has gone to Portland, where he will be assigned to new duties. Assignment of another officer to the local post Is expect ed, but Lieutenant Hnger's suc cessor has not yet been announced. Rubber boots and rubler work shoes of certain types now In Roseburg stores were frozen by the order which becomes effec tive last midnight, R. L. Preston, executive secretary of Ihe local rationing board, reported today. The order includes all hip length boots, body, thigh or : sporting boots, and knee height boots. Also included ure all below the knee height heavy and light boots and all rubber pacs and bootees and all laced rubber footwear of the same height as well as similar types, with or without laces. Retailers are advised that in ventory forms and a bulletin of instructions are available at the office of the local rationing board. Beginning Monday, October 5, consumers may make application for certificates authorizing pur chase of rubber boots and rubber work shoci. Eligibility requirements pro vide that the applicant's work must be essential to the promo tion of the war effort or to the maintenance of public health or safety; that the conditions of work require use of the request ed footwear; that employer-applicants must have customarily fur nished (not sold) rubber footwear to their employes and retained title thereto; that the consumer must not have adequate rubber footwear available for use; that the applicant must agree to sur render for salvage any worn out rubber boots or shoes In his pos session; that, the footwear autho rized by the board must be of the lightest weight and shortest height that will provide adequate and economical protection on the specific Job, and that only mini mum quantities be granted employer-applicants.
