EDWARDS i On July 4th of the year just passed, music rang through the echoing crypt of St. Paul's cathedral, still . miraculously standing after London . all about it bad been battpred to rubble. The occasion was the unveiling of a memorial tablet to Billy Fiske, the first Ameri can to give his life in this present war. The singers Were the filers from his own squad ron and certain other young American volunteers standing together in the candlelit dusk. This symbolic group of Anglo American courage sang Billy Fisko to his rest with the words: t . Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is tramping out the vint age where the grapes pf wrath are stored. ( Fragments pf the hymn came back to Correspondent Quentln Reynolds when he was describing that service in an overseas broadcast addressee rather pointedly to pr. Goeb bels In Berlin. He has sounded forth the . trumpet tiat shalj never cal) retrpat He Is sifting out the hearts of man before His Judgment seat Oh, be swllt, my soul to an swer Him, be jubilant: my feet. Those words are part of the national wealth. Words which will last as long as America does, perhaps longer. They were written by Julia Ward Howe, and she sent them to the Atlantic Monthly. The edi tion afixed the title "The Bat tle Hymn ol the Republic," and published them in February, 18U2. A men- Back From Washington Mr. and Mrs. George Powers (lave re turned to their home hero, follow ing a trip to Pullman, Wash., to attend the commencement exer cises of Washington State college, at which their son, Maxwell, was graduated. eewwxrfwyw,"wiiNeea aeaeMawwMrfVaMweMWeajeaewMai ROSEBURG LIVESTOCK AUCTION MARKET Montjay June 8, itareting at 1 1 :3Q.
