CHRISTIAN . in 'Melody for 3' Society and Clubs SIDE GLANCES ByGalbraith DINNER ENJOYED AT McFARLAND HOME A delightful dinner honoring Mrs. Viola Taylor and Mi's. Gil dersleeve was held on Mother's day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. R. McFarland. A song was sung in honor of the two guests of honor and gifts were presented to them from: Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Taylor and baby, Clark Taylor, Mrs. Hubbard and Gene and Betty, Forrest, Norman and Lee Simmons, Velma Gilbert and Mr. and Mrs. McMann and the host and hostess, Mr. and My. McFarland. During the morning church service at the Baptist church, a Bible was presented to Mr. Mc Farland, who left Tuesday for Grants Pass to enter the army. On Monday evening a surprise party was given Mr. and Mrs. Mc Farland by Mrs. Gilbert, Mr. and Mrs. Gildersleeve (parents of Mrs. McFarland i, Mrs. Viola Tay lor, mother of Mr. McFarland, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. John Blessing, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, of Garden Valley, and J. O. Osmundson. Music and visiting were enjoyed and re freshments were served. On Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Mc Farland went to Grants Pass, where the former entered the army. They were accompanied to Grants Pass by Mrs. Viola Taylor and John Blessing. VICTORY AID CLUB HAS FINE MEETING The Victory Aid club of Scotts burg had a business meeting Wed nesday, at which time the first aid instructor, State Patrolman Wells, was presented with a twenty-five dollar defense bond. The mem bership contest ended with the side captained by Ruth Bangs winning. The losing side planned a picnic to be held at the Apple gate picnic site May 17. All members of the club and their families are invited to attend. AUXILIARY TO SPONSOR DANCE AT FACILITY The state department of the V. F. W. auxiliary will sponsor a very' enjoyable dance tonight at 7:45 o'clock at the veterans ad ministration facility, to which the friends of the auxiliary and fa cility have been most cordially in vited tnttend. PUBLIC INVITED TO CARD PARTY TONIGHT Benefiting the USO clubrooms, the Junior Woman's club will sponsor a card party tonight at the rooms (in the Kohlhagen building). The party will begin at eight o'clock and reservations for bridge, five-hundred and pinochle may be made by calling either Mis. George Crenshaw at 188-R or Mrs. Clifford E. Smith at 411-Y. Prizes will be awarded win ners and light refreshments will be served. A series of five benefit parties will be sponsored by various or ganizations to benefit the USO clubrooms. At the close of the series grand prizes will be award ed. The parties will be held every Wednesday evening for five weeks. CANTEEN GROUPS TO MEET AT DINNER ON THURSDAY EVENING The three groups of the Ameri can Rod Cross canteen ladies will meet at a six-thirty o'clock dinner Thursday evening, May 14th, at the Episcopal parish hall on East Cass street. (AP) The Willamette university board of trustees' investigation of Amerl- can Legion charges that Dr. Carl Sumner Knopf, president of Wil lamette university, is a conscien tious objector, was under way here today, with the trustees five- man investigating committee promising its findings would be released as soon as possible. The committee last night inter viewed Willamette students and faculty members, Legion mem bers, and others."' Capital post, No. 9, American Legion, charged In a letter to the trustees that Dr. Knopf created a disturbance April 27 when the Sa lem selective service board refus ed to permit him to write the words "conscientious objector" on his draft registration card. Dr. Knopf, in a formal state ment, forgave the legion for its "unwarranted persecution," "for its "inflammatory statements con trary to facts. Return From Portland Fred L. Southwick and H. O. Mrs. Patterson's husband is a fireman for the Southern Pa cific. Leave for California Lt. and Mrs. Charles S. Collins and baby daughter, Michale, left this morn ing for San Luis Obispo, Calif., to make their home. Lt. Collins will be stationed at Camp Rob erts. Mrs. Collins and baby have been here for several months vis. King her mother, Mrs. Edyth Gil- mour, and uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Pargeter, and was Joined here a few days ago by Lt. Collins, who has Just recently completed his rtaining at Fort Bennings, Ga. Mr. Collins was formerly employed by the Ump qua forest service and was later transferred to Portland, where he was working at the time that all R. O. T. C. officers were called to army duty. Back From Eugene Mrs. Carl E. Wimberly has returned here, following the week-end in Eugene visiting her son, Carl, Jr., who was prime minister of the Junior week-end festivities on the U. of O. campus. Carl, Jr., was guest speaker for the Junior class over a broadcast on KORE and, with the queen and her four princesses and court, broadcast over KGW during the week-end. Mrs. Wim berly was the week end guest of Miss trances Cox, one of the four princesses, at Phi Beta Phi sorority. Mrs. Wimberly was elected vice-president of District No. 3 of the University of Ore gon Mothers club. The district In eludes Coo. Currv and Douglas counties. The club has created four new Victory scholarships for the duration. One will be for $200, the other three for $150. Killer of Mother Found Guilty of Manslaughter PORTLAND, May 13 (API- Clarence Nortin, 58, was convict ed by a circuit court Jury last night of manslaughter In the fa tal shooting of his mother, Mrs. Mary M. Nortin, 83, on March 3. Nortin contended his mother was accidentaly shot by a rifle while he was cleaning It. Sentence will be passed Mon- day. -- Garden Peas Given to Office A. J.
