Camas Valley vs. Myrtle Creek. 8:45 p. m Drain vs. Reedsport. county B-lcague basketball tour nament were scheduled this after noon and tonight as the leading teams of the county resume action after meeting yesterday in the opening round of the three day play-off series. Camas Val ley, Myrtle Creek, Drain and Reedsport were the survivors, and some brilliant contests were anticipated today as these teams attempt to stay in the running for the title. Thursday's games produced considerable excitement, particu larly the Camas Valley-Gardiner contest and the battle between Reedsport and Glendale, the scores being close and the put come In doubt until the final whislle. Camas Valley 33, Gardiner 31 The opening game between Camas Valley and Gardiner start ed with both teams showing ner vousness. Frequent close-in shots were missed by both teams in the early stages, but Camas Valley went into a half-time lead 1615. Both (cams substituted frequently as the game advanced, Myrtle Creek saving Its strength for games today, while Yoncalla en deavored to find a combination which would stop the Myrtle Creek assault. ' Drain 36, Lookingglass 23 A smooth-working defense by the Drain Warriors succeeded in bottling up the Lookingglass of fense very effectively, particular ly in the first half, in which Drain limited Lookingglass to one field goal to hold a lead of 11 to 2 at half time. Reedsport 34, Glendale' 30 The most exciting game of the opening round, the Rcedspor Glendale contest provided a fit ting climax to the day's activities. The weakened Reedsport team fought desperate ly to hold off the Glendale as sault which carried the game to a 30-30 tie with only one minute of play remaining but snap shots by Dunnlway and Bennett in the last 30 seconds pqt Reedsport safely out in front. Remaining Games In tho continuation of the tour nament today Gardiner meets Yoncalla at 4 p. m. and Looking glass plays Glendale at 5:30 p. m. for consolation honors. The teams meeting defeat this afternoon arc out pf further competition, while the winners will continue to seek the higher consolation honors in competition with the losers in to day's semi-finals. The semi-finals tonight are expected to pro duce plenty of action as Camas Valley tangles wUh Myrtle Creek and Reedsport meets Drain. Con solation finals will be played Sat urday morning, while the cham pionship finals wil be played Satqrday night. Bad Debts Year In Whlirc Deductible ' Worthless debts arising from unpaid wages, salaries, rents', and similar Items of taxable income are not allowable deductions un less the income such items repre sent ha? been included in income for 1941 or a pjior taxable year. To be allowed as a deduction from gross income, a bad debt must have been determined by the taxpayer to be worthless within the taxable year for which it is claimed and, where books arc kept, it also must have been charged off within the same year. The necessity for this pro vision is obvious. If a debt could be deducted without tho requir ment that it be charged off the taxpayer's books, the certainty of its wqrthlcssness would be open to question. Neither the taxpayer nor the government could be cer tain that a debt would not be claimed more than once. , If a debt were allowed as a de duction without regard to the year when it became worthless, such charges could be accumulat ed to be deducted in a year when there was a large incorqe. The burden is upon the taxpay er to show that a debt claimed as a deduction was without value during the taxable year. A state ment should b,e attached to the return showing the propriety pf any deduction for bad debts. If in (he exercise of sound business Judgment a taxpayer concludes, after making every reasonable effort to determine whether I there is likelihood of recdyery, I th!t the debt is qf no value, de- duction for such debt is allow jable. Court action as proof that the debt is worthless is not es sential. It is optional with the taxpay er, in a year prior to that In which a debt becomes wholly worthless, to take a deduction for partial loss if partial worthless lies pecucs. HHS Program Honors Memory of Lincoln A special assembly was held at Roseburg senior high school yes terday in commemoration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. The program was a send-off for two Roseburg citizens who are leav ing soon. Rey. John Barney, who plans to leave soon for the army, was the main speaker, and "Snap" Gilmore was also mak ing his last appearance as band master of senior high before he goes to Portland to work. The program yesterday consisted of the singing by the assembly pf "America the Beautiful," led by Miss Hawthone glee club direc tor; a solo by Mr. Hiatt, introduc tion of the speaker by Principal C. H. Beard, and the main talk by the RevJ Mr. Barney. The or chestra played "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and the assembly was closed by the singing of f'The Star Spangled Banner" and the flag salute.
