Navy Now Offers Enlistees Wider Opportunities The expansion program of the U.'S. navy affords a wide range of opportunity for men who de sire to be of service to their country and at the same time ob tain education and experience v.'hleh will be of value to them in "later !i!e, mxxrdiii to Benny Mr. Hall arrived here Tuesday and will remain through Thurs day to accept enlistments In the navy. Arrangements have been made whereby a recruiting offi cer will visit Hoscburg Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. Headquarters are main tained at the chamber of com merce office. . The greatest need nt present. Hall reports, is for men fo train for naval aviation and for men ' with some degree of experience in radio operation. Men are wanted for both ground and flying duty In avia tion, he reports. Men who suc cessfully complete ground school work can be accepted for pilot training. Men who hold licenses as amateur radio operators and even those who are not licensed but have had technical experi ence can secure ratings in the communications department. , Aage Llmlti Top Now 50. The navy now can accept men from 17 to 50 years of age In all departments, Hall reports. Mar ried men can enlist providing they procure waivers of depen dents. . i . . A large number of young men . who plan to study medicine re cently have been enlisted In the hospital corps, he reports. The navy course In pre-modics and pharmacy gives not only the the ory of o regular pre-medlcs course, but also provides practical experience, particularly In phar macy and minor surgery. Such training greatly aids the student In his future studies for his de gree in medicine. Many pharma cists and hospital experts, Hall reports, have entered highly paid jobs in civil life after leaving the navy. Applicants, wherever possible, are requested to show a certifi cate of proof of birth at the time of applying for cnllstnSent, but it Is not necessary that this proof be shown if not Immediately avail able. , In the event the applicant has some dlfflcully .In. .establish ing the required proof! h will be given assistance by the recruiting service, Hall states. Assistant State Defense Coordinator Appointed SALEM, .Tan. 21-(AP) James D. Olson, Portland, former -Information director for the state game commission, today was appointed assistant state defense coordina tor by Governor Sprague. He will serve under .terrold Owen, state defense coordinator. Olson has assisted Owen for the past month, having been granted an indefinite leave of absence by the game commission. Olson is a veteran newspaper man, having worked as a reporter on both Portland newspapers, the San Krancisco Call-Bulletin, and other California newspapers. He Is a member of Portland post No. 1, American Legion, Participant in Lottery Draws Jail Sentence SEATTLE, Jan. 21.-(AP Arthur W. Kane, a Superior, . Wis., railroad clerk, was sentenc ed to serve 11 months In the King county jail for) his part In the op erationg of the International Transportation and Communica tion Mutual association, a lottery, Federal Judge John l Cohen rul ed yesterday. A second defendant, Edward F. Schmill, railroad ticket taker of Mandan, N. l, was given a sus pended sentence of six months and placed on five years proba tion after he pleaded an Illness which might cause his death at any time. I loth had pleaded guil ty to the government charges. Five others charged in the same ease will be tried as soon as a Jury now being selected is com pleted. John E. Allen, Native Of Oakland, Passes On John Edward Allen, 08, w ho re sided at the Star apartments on West Douglas street, Hoscburg. died yesterday following a short illness, lie was born at Oakland, Oregon, August 25, 1873, and was married to Ethel Blair at Dallas, Oregon, in 1017. He had resided at Drain for a number of years before coming to Koseburg about two months ago. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ethel Allen, of Portland, Oregon, and two sons, Edward Allen and Ernest Allen, both of Hoscburg. The body has been removed to the Douglas Funeral home and funeral arrangements will be an nounced later. The answer Is that they should sign. "Everyone signs pledge cards to indicate to the government the particular autho rized agency through which bonds are being purchased. It is a canvass of every man, woman and child in Douglas county," Pargeter said. "Through this campaign we are given the opportunity again to pledge our allegiance to our flag by pledging to buy defense bonds and stamp3 cn- a regular lion of the war and to indicate through which payroll savings plan we are doing our part. "Subscriptions' will be left en tirely to the discretion of the per son solicited. Minute men will of fer no gratuitous advice, but will be sufficiently well informed on the defense bond and stamp pro- gram to answer any questions. All minute men have been in structed to proceed on the theory that families already have made up their minds as to the extent of their participation." General Howard Stuckey, city chairman, slates that tho cam paign workers will concentrate on Hoseburg housewives during the morning and afternoon hours but will call back again up until 9:30 in the evening to secure bond pledges from heads of fami lies. Navy ' Andy Corn and William Tison, both residents of Roseburg, have enlisted In. the U. S. navy. They were enlisted through the recruit ing office at Eugene and now are at Portland awaiting transfer to the naval station at San Diego for training.
