Virtually all the maior institu tions of higher learninc are adopting or planning short cuts to education. Because enrollments eenorallv have been reduced 10 ncr ront nr more by the movement of young men into national service, some institutions of higher learning are making special efforts to attract students. The suggestion of a 21-vpar college term was offered by Dean of Students H. T. Condon of tho University of Washington. Ho said it could be done by adoption of the six-day week and expan sion ox tne summer scnooi curri culum. Dr. Lee Paul Seig, president of tho university, advocated ,a tele scoping of grade and high school as well as college years. "You can't tell mo," he said, "that it takes 12 yearsi to. go through grade and high school and four more years for college. It can be done faster. Just how much faster I don't know." Stanford, the University of California and other large Insti tutions already have laid plans tor a shortening of some; courses to three years. Frank J. Smith, early Wil lamette river steamboat pilot and Oregon marine historian, died yesterday. He was 81. t Born In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he came to Oregon in 18G5, settling with his grandparents at Buena Vista . in Marion county. First employed as a cabin boy on river steamers, he later became a mas ter mariner. He edited numerous marine journals and . was historian and superintendent of Champoeg state park.
