Before coming here they had visited relatives in Col orado and I'tah and upon leav ing they went to Marshfield plan ning lo follow the coast to New port, from where they expected to go to Portland and on to Ya kima. Yellowstone and other places of Interest en route home. Sunday they and Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson visited Bruce Ferguson at Tiller while Monday they went to Hoseburg aecompanlod by Mrs. Ferguson, calling on Mrs. Bruce Ferguson, who Is a patient at Mercy hospital and also at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Lan der, Sr., at Glengary. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Wright and their house guests. Mrs. Frank House and sons, Gene and Barton, and Mrs. Jack Lewis, were among those going to the huckleberry patch Sunday. Jenn Duncan, who underwent a tonclloctomy in Portland last week became very III early Tues day morning and was taken to Hoseburg for medical attention. She Is reported to be much bet ter now. Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Miles of Co-piiHe were guests last week at the home of Mrs. Miles' uncle, J. A. Worthinton. During the week end they and Mr. nnd Mrs. Worthington enjoyed a trip lo Diamond and Crater lakes and on to Bend where they were over night guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Van Allen, former Days Creek residents. They re turned by way of McKenzie pass stopping at Springfield to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray HoTdtal, son lnlaw and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Worthinglon. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Currier and son. Dale, of Saginaw, were guests during the week-end at the home of Mrs. Currier's grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Wright. Mr. nnd Mrs. Verlln Neet of Salem recently visited for a short time at the home of Mrs. Pete I'lam. They were returning to Salem after a vacation trip to Crater lake. Mr. Neet, who is now assistant manager for the Ore gonian was at one time station ed at the South Umpqua Falls CCC camp. Over night visitors Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Worthington included Mrs. William Wuorinen, her father, J. Taylor, Mrs. Etella Parmelee and daughter, Louise and Mrs. Mar ietta Luna, all o Portland. They were en route to Los Angeles. Mrs. Wuorinen has many friends here as she resided In the neigh borhood lor a couple of years while Mr. Wuorinen was assist- high school instructor. Melrose MELROSE, Aug. 26. Carl Seeley spent the last weekend visiting friends at Florence and Maplcton, and returned to his home Monday evening. Jack Lang returned home Wed nesday from Mercy hospital, where he received medical care for the past three weeks. Mrs. C. E. Ileeca and sons, Ted, and Roger, are enjoying a vaca tion at Bandon. John Richards and son, Bud, left Monday evening for Myrtle Point, w nitre the latin is em ployed. Mrs. J. E. Ison returned home I Thursday from a two-months visit with relatives In West Vir ginia, and Kentucky. Her sister, Mrs. Langford, accompanied her on the way home as far as Den ver, Colo., where she resides. She has visited at Melrose with her sister, and will be remembered by several Melrose people. Mr. and Mrs. Hodge, of Long Beach, Calif., visited last week wilh Mr. and Mrs. John Richards, and family and last Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Hodges, Mr. and Mrs. Richards, their son, Bud, and daughters, Miss Waltha, and Miss Ruth, went to Steamboat, for dinner and returned home by .Diamond lake and Crater lake. The Hodge family have visited at Melroso on a number of occa sions. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Seeley left Saturday morning for Orphena, Idaho, to visit for a week with the latter's brother and sisters. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Holmqulst and son, Robert, and daughter, Patty and Miss Alice Harrington, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Johnson and daughter, Retta, all left Friday to enjoy a few days vacationing at Marshfield and Empire. W. M. Morgan left last Satur urday for South Bend, Wash., where he joined his wife nnd where employment was awaiting him. Ho has spent the past year assisting V. S. Woodruff with his work. C. E. Recce, Melrose merchant, is having the interior of his store repainted. The work is being done by George Handy. W. R. Van Ornum spent the last week end at his home. Ho returned to the hospital Sunday evening. Mrs. George Suntlberg anu son, Donald, and daughter, Donna, went to Drain Sunday to visit for two wppks with hpr parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bartholomy. C. H. Atterbury, of Koseourg, was a business visitor at Melrose Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Belle and son, Mervln, ana uaugnier, -uea, of Las Vegas, Nev arrived Sun day evening to visit Mrs. Belle's parents, Mr. antl Mrs. urn wan- doll at Landers Lookout, anu visit other relatives and friends. The Belle family formerly resld. ed at Millwood before moving last winter to Nevada. Miss Mildred Kruse, a former grade teacher here and now teaching at Yoncalla, spent Mon day and part of Tuesday as guest of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Marsh. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Meredith and children, Llla, Claire and Charles, went to Rice creek Sun day to visit the former's father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Meredith, and meet Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dare of Pasadena, Calif. Mrs. Dare is a niece of Mrs. J. J. Meredith. After spending a few days at Rice creek, Mr. and Mrs. Dare will return home via Crater lake and the coast route. Preparations for the' West Douglas county fair which will be held here Thursday, Aug. 28, are well under way. A hot lunch eon will be served at noon by a committee from the P.-T. A., pro ceeds of which will be applied on the 4-H scholarship fund sponsor ed by the P.-T. A. A refreshment stand will also be operated by Looklngglass the grange. An Interesting pro gram of music, skits, games, etc., is being arranged and Rev. Perry Smith of Roseburg has consent ed to give a patriotic talk. Prem ium lists have been mailed to the adjoining communities Included In this fair district and a large attendance Is anticipated. The opening date for school Is still In abeyance but will be an nounced as soon as It has been definitely arranged. The staff of grade teachers Is now complete and Includes, Mrs. Fred Richard for 7tli and 8th grade room, Miss Geraldine Williams of Mcnmoulh, for the 5th and 6th grade room, Mrs. Helen Saar for the 3rd and 4th grade room and Mrs. Lou Marsters of Roseburg for the 1st and 2nd grades. Prof. James Burton will continue as principal of the high school, assisted by Miss Helen Wooden. The addition al teacher for the high school has not yet been definitely chosen. . Azalea AZALEA, Aug. 27. Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Smith and Miss Marjorie Booth shopped In Grants Pass Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. George Safranek visited Thursday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Farnam. They were en route to their home In Folsom, Calif., after spending several days at Eugene on busi ness. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Clare were In Roseburg on business Tups- day. Mr. and Mrs- Henry Coyle and daughter, Ellen, from Orland, Calif., visited a couple of days the first of the week with Mrs. Coyle's brother-in-law and filter. Mr. and Mm.
