leadership Of
national League

The' St. Louis Cardinals are
hack on top of I ho National
league seesaw loduy. but their
position In the stanrllnjrs Is not
as important as the fact that
Mort Cooper It back with his
pitching magic.
Until he developed elbow
trouble In June, the 27-year-old
righthander figured In be the ace
of Billy Southworth's pitching
corps. Then, when he had to
have an operation nobody know
whether he would pitch better
or not at all.
Yesterday came the real test
when Cooper was sent out against
the Cincinnati Reds and pitched
and batted the Cardinals to a 3-2
11-lnning victory that put St.
UjuIs in front of the idle Brook
lyn Dodgers again by Just a
shade. The Cards have a half
game lead but their percentage
advantage is only .6412 to .6436.
In the only other National
league game, the Pittsburgh Pi
rates took a 4 3 decision over the
Chicago Cubs on bopez' homer
with two out in the ninth, it was
the Pirates' sixth straight tri
umph and their 18th in 21 games.
Yanks Lose to Boston.
The New York Yankees drop
ped a 9-5 verdict to the Boston
Red Sox for their fifth loss In
seven contests. Newsome limit
ed the Yanks to eight hits. Ted
Williams hit his 22nd homer and
two singles to lead Huston s 12
hlt attack on three New York
pitchers.
The defeat did not reduce the
Yankees' American league lead,
however, for Detroit downed Bob
Keller and the Cleveland Indians,
4-3, In 13 innings. Feller struck
out 13, but walked 11 and in the
eighth Inning forced In one run
when the bases were loaded.
The Washington Senators sent
the Philadelphia Athletics crash
ing to their fifth straight defeat,
5-4, on six-hit pitching by Hudson
and Masterson and an attack led
by Catcher Al Early, who sup
plied two doubles and two singles.
Chapman hit a homer and triple
for all tho A's runs.
The Chicago White Sox went
in a hitting spree In the last
four Innings of a night game,
pounding out 17 hits to beat the
St. Louis Browns, 11 1, behind the
seven-hit hurling of Ross.

Holding used cars for higher prices, as
so many dealers arc now said to be do
ing, is gambling, pure and simple and,
at the public's expense.
There is every indication that those
who hold them will gel higher prices for
them. Prices have gone up, and the trend
is still higher.
We think that holding used cars is in
flationary. We're against such a policy.
The foundation of our business is new
cars and this community has given
us record new-car sales this year. We
will not now gamble in used cars, at
the expense of the public who have
given us one of the best years in our
history, So our used cars are priced
downivard, for immediate clearance.
On our lot, now to an even great
er extent than in recent months
you will find "buys" substantially un
der the market. We invite you to
come in and look them over.
