Census Bureau Reports
Population Increasing ,
WASHINGTON. The census
bureau estimated today that the
nation's population 1 n c r eased
W15.647 In the last nine months of
1940 and totaled 132,584,922 on
Jan. 1, 1941.
The population of the contin
ental United States on Anrll 1.
1940, when the last census was
taken, was 131,669,275.
Since then, birth, death -and
Immigration statistics have indi
cated an average growth of 102,-
000 per month. Jn the last 10
years, the average gain was 7-4.-(XX)
a month. Part of the fast
sain was due to the fact that im
migration brought in about 9,000
persons a month last year com
pared with a net loss from emi
gration In the last decade. The
remainder was due to a higher
birth rate.
No forecast was made of fu
ture population.
Ordnance Unit Spends
! Night in Roseburg
The 4th ordnance company, en
route from Fort Ord, Calif., to
Fort Lewis, Wash., spent last
night In Roseburg. The company
consists of 93 men and two offi
cers. The men were given free
camping privileges at the Rose
burg Auto park.

ALHAMBRA, Calif., Aug. 5.

Judge Harry F. Sewell, 52, died
yesterday, but his widow was not
informed.
She underwent a major opera
tion at a hospital Wednesday.
Physicians, who attributed Sew
ell's death to a heart attack in
duced by nervous exhaustion, re
commended that the shock be
withheld from her temporarily.
He was divorced at Las Vegas,
Nev.. from Mary Bell Sewell,
w ho was granted custody of tlieir
son, Wilbur Powell Sowell. On
Dec. 13, 1934, he married his sec
retary, Mary Virginia Piatt. They
had two children.
Wilbur Sewell, now 21, was
sentenced July 2 to from one
year to life In San Quentin pri
son for second degree robbery.
