Society and Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER NONPARIEL GRANGE HAS FINE MEETING The Nonpareil grange held its regular meeting on Wednesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Goff and Mrs. Pickens and daughter of Roseburg attended. Mrs. Goff assisted by Mrs. Elton Bover, in stalled the following officers: Pe ter Adams, master; C. T. Cham berlain, assistant steward; Mrs. C. T. Chamberlain, chaplain; Will Coleman, gatekeeper; Mrs. Will Coleman, Pomona. The grange passed a resolution asking the county court to oil the road from the Sutherlin village limits . to Nonpareil The master appointed a committee to wait on the coun ty court in regard to this. Mrs. Ghanghrow has circulated a peti tion asking that this road be oiled and the grange is using its influ ence to further this project. Ow ing to the greatly increased traf fic to the Bonanza mine, and to the logging operations in this dis trict, this road is one of the most traveled highways in this part of the state. After the Installation, the grange enjoyed a song fest, led by Mr. Goff. who. also gave an interesting talk on the prevention of fires. This was followed by a social hour of guessing games and stunts, presided over by the lecturer, Mrs. Hall, after which the ladies served a very delightful lunch. MRS. M. PERRON ENTERTAINS AT DINNER Mrs. M. Perron entertained at a delightful turkey dinner Sun day at her home. Lovely bouquets of roses were used about the unoms and on the table. Covers were placed for Mrs. Minnie E. Roberts of Salt Lake City, Mrs. Goldie Gaglla, of Mo sier, Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Freed, of California, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Perron, Mr. and Mrs. David Perron and the hostess, Mrs. M. Perron. GOOD WILL CLUB HAS MEETING The Good Will club met at the home of Mrs. Fred Agee onWed nesday and spent a verv pleasant afternoon in sewing and visiting. Ladles of school district No. 30 in Scotts valley met Tuesday, June 3, for the purpose of organizing a Parent-Teacher association. POTTAWATOMIE GROUP HAS MEETING AND ENJOYABLE WIENER ROAST The Pottawatomie Camp Fire group met at the Camp Fire roomes Monday to make plans for completion of home craft honors. Plans were also made for a picnic to be held at Maple grove. Those present were: Donna Dunham, Joan Deets. Bar bara Ellis, Marilyn Dixon, Kay Holmes, Mary Ann Sandsted, Laura Oar, Ethel Fretwell and the guardian, Miss Eleanor Fies. On Thursday evening the group held a wiener roast, which was enjoyed by Donna Cracroft, Donna Dunham, Sally Smith, Mary Ann Sansted, Laura Oar, Ethel Fretwell, Mary Tilly, Lois Pounds and the guardian. Miss Fies. Baseball was enjoyed dur ing the evening hours. ANNUAL BANQUET ENJOYABLE AFFAIR RIDDLE, June C The junior and senior classes of the high school enjoyed their annual ban quet Thursday evening, which was held in the domestic science room of the school. Mrs. Fred Ball superintended the prepara tion of the dinner which featured roast turkey and all the fixings. Seated at table were the twenty one members of the classes, Prof, and Mrs. Horace Lundberg, Prof, and Mrs. Gordon Frazee and Miss Edna Davis. PAST MATRONS CLUB TO MEET ON MONDAY The Past Matrons club of Rose burg chapter of Eastern Star will meet Monday night at a 7:30 o'clock dessert-supper at the home of Mrs. William Bell with Mrs. L. E. Garwood and Mrs. A. B. Taylor acting as assisting hos tesses. All members are cordial ly invited to be present. American Legion Auxiliary Activities By MRS. CLAUDE BAKER Another year of endeavor has ended for the Umpqua unit of the American Legion auxiliary. The last meeting of the year was held Tuesday night, following which a message most timely was brought by John C. Kuhns, assist ant regional forester. He ex plained the need for reforesta tion to maintain a sustained yield of trees for the nations needs. This was followed with delight ful refreshments furnished by ! Mrs. J. M. Judd, Mrs. Velio Broadway and Mrs. R. R. Ritz man. The auxiliary will cooperate with the city chairman, Homer Grow, in the nation-wide drive to raise S10.765.000 to be used toward promotion of recreation, health and safety for soldiers, sailors, marine and defense work ers. Roscburg's drive will start next Tuesday. Mrs. Roy Young and her community service com mittee will head the auxiliary workers. Douglas county's share is S1200. When these volunteer workers come to your door we trust you will understand that this Is the national organization headed by Thomas E. Dewey. He has made an extensive survey of the need of such a program for our hoys in the service. These are boys Just like our own Rose burg sons who want only clean entertainment but without an op portunity for such, might be thrown into less desirable occu pation of their leisure time. Radio programs will be con tinued this summer with Mrs. Dora Ritzman heading the July 1 program and Mrs. Ted Post that of August 5. The dates of July 15 and August 19 programs will be presented by the Legion. We trust the listening public has enjoyed these programs of the past year and hope that as a whole they have been a credit to station KRNR. The unit most heartily thanks the station per sonnel for its most kindly coop eration in presenting these. Mrs. Irvin Riegel, chairman for the poppy sale announced that all the poppies kept in Rose burg were sold and most of those sent to outlying districts by Mrs. Loren Miller. From these pro ceeds the hospital work for next year will be carried on. Each year the unit purchases a navy plate. These are beauti ful plates each commemorating a different historical naval en gagement. This was offered as a prize this year and won by Mrs. Dora Ritzman at the meet ing Tuesday. All reports are due at nation al and state headquarters this next week. Will each person re sponsible for one of these have them in my hands not later than Monday. Each year a history of the unit is sent to department. This year we are requesting each chairman to meet at the home of Mrs. Tom Parkinson Friday night (tonight) to have pictures taken for this. If you have an other engagement please make this one first at 7:30. This is most important. A twenty year history will be on display at the state convention and pictures arc needed of each past president to complete this. If yours is not there kindly be at tnis garnering to have it taken. A midnight stunt show will be presented at the convention. De tails will be presented later. June 16 is the next and last meeting of the junior members at the home of Mrs. James Young. The next week four of the group will go to Girls Mate. This is the citizenship training school which is under the able leadership of State Senator Doro thy McCullough Lee. This is an experience which every girl cher- ishes. The boys have been given a similar training project in Boys' State which is to be held at the Oregon State college cam pus at the same time. These are designed to be practical work ing models of our American form of government. Ruth Ann Ruhl. Wilma Pounds, President Ethel Van Voorst and Secretary Gertrude Pierce are to be in at tendance this year. The state convention of the Le gion and auxiliary will be held at Eugene this year, July 20 to 23. Delegates elected were Presi dent Mrs. Claude Baker, Incom ing first and second vice-presidents, Mrs. S. W. Van Voorst and Mrs. J. M. Judd. Incoming secretary, Mrs. J. L. Pounds. Al ternates are Mrs. Walter Olm scheid. Mrs. Ira Pierce, Mrs. Tom Parkinson, Mrs. Arthur Mid land. Do not fall to be at the home of Sue Parkinson at 7:30 tonight for the picture of all chairmen and officers. Bogard, of Bremerton, Wash., has arrived in Roseburg to spend a month visiting her mother, Mrs. V. R. Duncan. Mr. Bogard brought her to Roseburg and following a short slay, re turned to his work at Bremer ton. Mrs. Bogard was formerly Miss Bernese Duncan of this city. Visiting at Dayton Melvln De- Dobbelaere, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. DeDobbelaere, is spending the week at Dayton, Oregon, vis iting at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Magness. The latter couple and their small daughter, Myrna, spent last weekend at the DeDobbelaere home here. Home Nursing Class to Meet The evening class in home nursing, sponsored by the Red Cross, will meet tonight, June 6, in the Red Cross office upstairs in the Roseburg branch of the U. S. National bank building. The class will meet every Tues day and Friday night during the month of June. The afternoon home nursing class will take its examination next Wednesday aft ernoon and will hold its final meeting on June 18.
