Izlng for the first time In Suth erlin, the Girl Scouts with about twenty members began holding regular meetings two weeks ago in the Art building.' Mrs. Lyla Chenoweth, leader, and Mrs. Marie Madsen and Anna Beecroft, assistants, are working out a pro gram that will give these Inter ested girls the best that is avail able for the summer months In the out doors. Arts and crafts will be taken during the fall sea son. On Friday the group enjoy ed a wiener roast at the Beecroft picnic grounds, and a skating party for the senior members was held earlier In the week. Sat urday morning the younger group met at the home of the leader to pull candy and play games. A two-weeks camping trip is being contemplated for later In the summer. For the summer months swim ming, bicycling, out of door games, hiking, out-door cookery, forest study, etc., has been plan nod. The girls plan to give an entertainment in the form of a vaudeville next month to finance their camping trip. The committee selected for the sponsors of the Girl Scout troop are Mrs. Mark Jordan, Mrs. Frank Holgate, Mrs. Ray Hoyt, Mrs. Maurice Vogelpohl and Mrs. Walter Stowe. A meeting has been arranged for Thursday ev ening, June 5, at Jordan's store to make plans for the summer. SPRING HANDICAP TOURNAMENT QUALIFYING ROUNDS TO BE THURSDAY The first qualifying rounds of the annual spring handicap golf tournament of the ladies of the Roseburg Country club will open nt nine o'clock Thursday morn ing at the club course. A potluck luncheon will he served at 12:30 n'elock and the contract bridge tournament play will begin at one-thirty o'clock. MONTANA VISITORS HONORED AT PICNIC YONCAIXA, June 3. A pic nic was enloyed at the Lambdin home south of town Sunday, honoring Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McClain. of Butte, Mont., and Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Lambdin and family of North Bend, Ore. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lambdin. Mr. and Mrs. I.unney and family, Betty and Bob Lambdin. The pupils of the intermediate room of the local school complimented their teacher, Miss Gem Hutchin son, with a charming birthday party Monday at the noon hour. The group presented the honoree with a very attractive gift and in addition she received a number of other lovely gifts. CLASS ACTIVITIES HELD DURING WEEK CAMAS VALLEY, June 2. The activities Incident to the clos ing of school started Thursday. May 22, with the presentation of the senior play in the auditorium of the school house at eight o'clock in the evening. A large and appreciative audience greet ed each scene of the plav, "The Arizona Cow Boy," with ap plause as the plot unfolded and came to the "happy ending." Early Friday morning the sen iors, namely, Dorothy Standicy, Dorothy Kreiger, Geneva Hunt ley, Gerald Harding, Bill Olll vant, Donald Lawson, Frank Clark and Lloyd Roberts with Professor and Mrs. C. C. Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Sting, started on the annual Sneak day trip. The first night was spent in Crescent City by way of the coast highway. Saturday the group visited the Oregon caves, then spent the night in Medford. Sunday was spent at Crater lake and on the way home by the Tiller-Trail cutoff, all reporting a most enjoyable trip. Monday evening the students of the seventh and eighth grades enjoyed a party at the school house with their teacher, Nor man Sting. Tuesday evening the baccal- aurete services, conducted by Rev. Perry Smith of Roseburg were held at the church honor ing the senior class and the eighth grade graduates. ACHIEVEMENT DAY IS HELD AT SCHOOL CAMAS VALLEY, June 2. All of the 4-H clubs finished up their work before the' last of school. Achievement day was held at the schoolhouse Wednesday eve ning, May 21, with a program given by the different 4-H clubs. The sewing clubs exhibited their work during the evening and re freshments were sold to raise the necessary money to send one member to summer school. Miss Margaret Brown club leader of cooking two took her club members on a picnic near Reston Saturday where they en joyed a delicious lunch and then went on to Roseburg where they were taken to a movie. Mrs. Frances Thrasher was also one of the party. The first year sewing club with their leader Mrs. Norman Sting enjoyed a party at the school house Monday ending a successful club year. MR. AND MRS. CLARK ENTERTAIN AT DINNER DAYS CREEK, June 2. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Clark were hosts at a charming dinner party Monday evening. LADIES CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING DAYS CREEK, June 2. The South Umpqua Ladles club was most delightfully entertained the afternoon of Wednesday, May 21, at the home of Mrs. Fritz Snyder, Mrs. Don Snyder and Mrs. Maggie Snyder being assisting hostesses. Mrs. John Ferguson, club president, presid ed at the business .meeting. It was voted to retain the present officers for the coming year. They are president, Mrs. Fergu son; vice-president, Mrs. Ray Wright, and secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Gordon Clark. Plans for the work for the coming year were discussed. It was decided to again sponsor 4-H scholarships and to assist so far as possible with added improvements to the school kitchen and other facili ties. Miss Mildred Spore and Marshall Matthews were chosen to attend the 4-H club summer school to be held soon at Corval lis. Roll call subjects were dis cussed, various members giving subjects that would be of espe cial Interest to them and to the club as a whole. Following the business meeting a most Interest ing social hour was enjoyed. "Mother" was the predomlnent theme and many interesting facts concerning the mothers of those present were learned, as well as the birthplaces and birth dates of the latter. Moore won first prize while Mrs. Fritz Snyder was awarded second prize and Miss Marjorie Church the consolation prize. Mrs. Mary Barrett of the county health unit was present and gave a very fine talk on sub jects of much interest to the com munity. At the close of the after noon delicious refreshments were served to Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Gor don Clark and daughter, Sharon, Mrs. Ivan Welch, Mrs. Zed Chancy, Mrs. Norman Raymond, and son, Alan, Mrs. Wade Worth ington, Mrs. John Ferguson, Mrs. T. SHOWER PARTY Id ENJOYABLE AFFAIR CAMAS VALLEY, June 2. Mrs. E. A. Markham gave a shower Wednesday at the home of Mrs. A. J. Standley, honoring Mrs. Ed Nichols, nee Betty Par rott, of Roseburg. Visiting and a guessing con test were engaged in by the guests until the gifts were pre sented to Mrs. Nichols, when all gathered around to look over the many dainty articles receiv ed. Executive Meeting Postponed The executive board meeting of the Presbyterian Missionary so ciety scheduled for Wednesday at the VV. M. Campbell home has been postponed to Thursday, June 12, to be held at two o'clock at the home of Mrs. C. E. Roberts. Following the executive meeting the regular missionary society session and program will be held at the Roberts home at 2:30 o clock. Leave Monday Mr. and Mrs, Jess, of Fremont, Nebr., and the latter's brother, Hugh Hansen, of Roseburg, left here Monday for San Francisco and Los Angeles, en route to Santa Ana, to visit their grandfather and three aunts, and to Glendale, Calif., to visit an aunt, after which they will proceed to Nebraska. Roberts has returned to ; her home on Fowler street, following a trip to Berkeley, Calif., to see her son, Charles, take part in the commencement exercises of University of California, where he was graduated last week. He left on Wednesday for New York and will sail from there tomor row for Chile, South America, where he has been engaged as a mining engineer. Charles was graduated from Roseburg senior high school before going to U, of C. Back From Corvallls City School Superintendent and Mrs. W. M. Campbell and son, Mc Afee, have returned here, follow ing a trip to Corvallls to attend the commencement exercises of Oregon State college, at which their daughter.
