ROSEBURG NEWS-REVIEW, ROSEBURG, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 1941. NINE News of Douglas County Canyoiiville CANYONVJLLE, May 27. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Ayers, of Dexter, Ore., visited their son, Harry, at the Bible academy Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cooper and daughter, Dorothy Mae, have moved to Trail, where Mr. Coop er has work in the sawmill. Mrs. Edith Ackert spent the week-end in Roseburg. The baccalaureate services for the high school were held in the Methodist church here Sunday evening, with the Rev. O. M. Da vis, of Myrtle Creek, preaching the sermon. The graduating services were be held in the ;-.chool house, Thursday evening, May 22. There are four pupils graduating this year Harold Ramberg, Tuppence P e 1 h a m, lone Riddle and Lois Young. The baccalaureate services for the C13A also were held Sunday night, at the gospel mission. The junior-senior classes of the high school had an enjoyable banquet at Ford's Friday eve ning. At the dinner, the follow ing program was given: "Senior l class will," Lois Young; "class phophecy, Tuppence Pclham; junior address, Georgetta Mc Clane; response, Harold Ram berg; guest speaker, Mrs. Max jKimmel; group singing, "God Bless America. ine classes nn ished the evening by attending the theater at Myrtle Creek. Harry Bennett, who had his leg broken when he fell from a pickup at the school picnic, is re norted to be doine auite well. He lis at the hospital in Rosebnrg. Mr. and Mrs. H: J. Hash and daughter, Rosetta, were up from Cave Junction Saturday, look ing after business interests. Mr. and Mrs. Elton Bollen baugh and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Elliott were in Roseburg Friday, on business. Mr. Elliott bought a new car while there. A most enjoyable piano recital was given Thursday night by Mrs. Adele Shaffer for her pu pils. Sgt. Glenn Gilmore, of Co. D, 162nd Inf., was here on a fur lough over the week-end. He re turned to camp Thursday. visit her sister, Masel, for a week. : Mi's. Mary Jane Drigps was a dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Er mil Brlggs Sunday. Mi's. O. I. Lewis and son, Owen, went to Eugene, over the weekend. Miss Lydia Reichen took care of her place of busi ness. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Poole were in Roseburg Saturday after noon. Mi's. Margaret Beals and Mi's Clarice Carter were shopping in Koseburg Friday. Mrs. VV. C. Pclham and daugh- Tk- A.tk... Charles- Lilja, who went to California some time ago, on ac count of his health, is reported better, and expects to come home soon. Larry Womack flew to Port land last week. Mrs. Pclham, chairman of the Red Cross knitting here, went in to deliver a bunch of finished work and to get more material. The forestry club of the local school went to Glide Friday, and stayed until Saturday nisht. The classes in the primary and intermediate rooms of the local school had a picnic at the White House camp, up the can yon Friday. ' . Thursday Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Ashcraft took the graduating class of the high school on a j trip to Salem, Eugene and Cor- vallis, where- they visited the various colleges and the state buildings at Salem.' They had a wonderful time, getting home about 1 a. m. T I . Leokingglass LOOKI NGGL ASS, May 28. The Misses Mary and Pearl Ar chibald, old-time friends of Mrs. A. M. Robinson, stopped a few hours at the Robinson home on Sunday enroute to their home in Portland concluding a vacation trip which included points in California and down into Mex ico. Mr. and Mi's. John Maddox spent Sunday in Nonpariel vis iting at the home of their niece, Mrs. Howard Russell. Rev. and Mrs. Luther Adams arrived last week for a few weeks' stay at the home of the latler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Andrus, and family. The Misses Edna 'Smith and Mary Whalen, teachers in the Gardiner schools, drove up Sun day to spend the day with the former's grandmother, Mrs. Mary Smith and uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Marsh, and family. The seniors of the local high school left Friday for the an nual sneak day trip. They were accompanied by Prof. James Bur ton, Mrs. Luther Adams, Miss Lillian Mathews and Willard Crow, and the trip included the drive down the coast to Crescent City, returning via the Oregon cnvei, Medford and Crater lake. Part of the group, including the Misses Lillian Mathews, May belle Strickland and Ivan Mnt thews, Vernon Green, Calvin Wil liams and Raymond Keifor, drove on to Lakevicw to visit Mr. and Mrs. Dale Matthews, broth er and sister-in-law of Lillian and Ivan. Baccalaureale services wore held in the local church Sunday evening for the graduating class. The program included the pro cessional and recessional by Misi Helen Wooden, solo by Miss Man lice Holmes, Invocation by Rev. Luther Adams and sermon by I'.rv. Mr. Garboden. The senior class includes, the Misses Mny Mle Strickland, Luella Crow, Violet Andrus and Olive Peter son find Raymond Keifer, Ve- nnii Green, Culvin Williams and Ivan Mali hews. Drain .. DRAIN, May 27.- Donald, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cain, was taken Monday to a Eugene hospital where he was operated on for appendicitis. Mr. and Mrs. Horace Wilson, who spent the winter in Califor nia, returned to their ranch home west of town, last week. Mrs. Howard Woolman, ac companied by her little grand daughter Barbara, and Mrs. L. H. Vandervert and Patty Cannon made a business trip to Roseburg Monday. Mr. and Mrs. C. G. LaGrander and Jim Burnett attended the American Legion convention in Portland Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford LaMear and family of Astoria spent the week-end at the parental D. C. Davis home. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Meacham are the parents of a daughter, Dorothy Mae, born May 7th. A son was born May 3rd to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Godel of Divide.
