THREE Society and Clubs By BETTY SHOEMAKER MARGARET CARR TALKS ON "ART APPRECIATION" AT FINE ARTS MEETING Miss Margaret Carr gave an educational talk on "Art Appre ciation" for members of the Bine' Arts department of the Roseburg Junior Woman's club Thursday evening at Benson school at 7 o' clock. . She touched on the fundamen tal necessities of a good picture, stressing line, color, value, type of painting and the artist. By means Of colored slides to Illus trate her talk she showed how pictures were painted not to ex press a story but to show the use ot the above mentioned topics in forming patterns. The speaker suggested that the public study the picture to find out what is in the work rather than to study the picture because it was painted by someone of note. Among the artists' work illus trated were Gilbert Stuart, Sar gent, Homer, Whistler, Hassen, a former resident of Portland, Bel ' lows, Picasso, Cesanhe and oth ers. v Following the discussion the group motored to Brands for a social hour. Miss Betty Shoe maker, chairman of the group, was honored with a handkerchief shower. She is leaving March 10 for Medford to take up her duties as society editor on the Medford Mail Tribune. Enjoying the evening were Miss Elaine Brown, Miss Eleanor East ling, Miss Lois Pounds, Mrs. Har old Hoyt, Mrs. Wm. Unrath, Mrs. James Henbest, Mrs. Ralph Rod ley, Mrs. W. L. Hoyt, Miss Elea nor Fies, Mrs. Jack Chapman and Miss Betty Shoemaker. The group will meet March 12 nt the home of Miss Eleaine Brown to continue Its study of art. ART EXHIBIT TO BE OPEN THIS EVENING FOR PUBLIC INSPECTION Camera club members and local artists exhibited their work for the pleasure of local art followers at the Elks temple this after noon. The display will be open to the public with no admission charge between the hours of sev en and ten o'clock tonight. The exhibit arranged by Mrs. T. G. Watson and Miss Margaret Carr is particularly outstanding with numerous artists displaying (heir talents in the fields of oils nd water colors. Among the Camera club mem bers having photographs display ed are Horace Berg, Clyde Cars tens, George Caskey, Bill Chal mers, Fred Chapman, Frank Coen, Leonard DeLaney, Sidney and Joe Fredrickson, Clifford Hess, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hard ing, Ed Kohlhagen, Lucille Len- ox, Lavola McMillan, Dorothy Norton, Frank Poole, Myrtle Poole, Gene Powell, Gilbert Wal ters, Virginia Walters, Zeke Wal ton, Mrs. T. G. Watson, Walter Wilson, Lester WImberly, Fritz Simpson, Nina Simpson, Dr. B. R. Shoemaker and Earl Wiley. INFORMAL AFTERNOON TEA HONORS MRS. PARGETER AT CLAIRE STREET HOME Mrs. Harry Pargeter was hon ored with an informal tea at the Pargeter home on Claire street Wednesday afternoon by Mrs. George Wharton and Mrs. Jack Wharton. . The guests called between the hours of three and five o'clock and visiting was enjoyed. Tea was"served with Mrs. Harry Black and Mrs. G. L. Osborne presiding at the table which was centered with an arrangement o magnolias. Lighted pink and white tapers completed the table decorations. BIRTHDAY PARTY HONORS DONALD PEARSON Donald Pearson was honored at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pearson, on East 1st Avenue north with a birthday party Monday, Feb. 24, celebrat ing his eighth birthday anniver sary. Games were played and later refreshments were served from a table decorated in red and white. Balloons were used, to decorate the rooms. Donald received a number of birthday gifts. (. A large birthday cake was served to Mollie Fullerton, Bobby Church, John Marvin Robertson, Jerry Long, Larry Fisher and Donald Pearson. Mrs. Pearson was assisted by Mrs. Atlrian Fisher and Mrs. Frank Long. BAPTIST CIRCLE MEETS WITH MRS. JOHN BURTON Circle No. 2 of the Roseburg Baptist Woman's society met with Mrs. Robert Burton at her home on the North "Pacific highway Thursday afternoon for "a 1:30 o'clock luncheon. The table was laid with a lace cloth and centered with a bouquet of Japanese quince. Following the luncheon a business meeting was held with Mrs. Lee Merchant pre siding. Attending were Mrs. Greta Caskey, Mrs. Mollie Moffitt, Mrs. bailey, Mrs. Rainey, Mrs. Jack Parrott, Mrs. Leon Haas, Mrs. Lee Merchant and the hostess. The circle will meet March 20 at the home ot Mrs. T. W. Thorn ason on Fleser street. MRS. HENRY COX ENTERTAINS CLUB MELROSE, Feb. 27. The la dies of the West Melrose club met with Mrs. Henry Cox Thurs day. A most enjoyable after noon was spent with visiting, needlework and the business meeting. Gifts were presented to the retiring officers, Mis. Seeley, president, and Mrs. Pet requin, secretary-treasurer. A dainty lunch was served at tables decorated in the holiday motif by the hostess, Mrs. Cox, to: Mi's. C. O. Critcser, Mrs. Charles Docrner, Mrs. E. M. Seeley, Mi's. W. G. Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bass, Mrs. A. D. Imrie, Mrs. Ray S. Petrequin, Henry Cox, and Mrs. H. H. Thompson. The next meeting will be a special session Thursday after noon, February 27, at Mrs. Im rie's where quilting will be start ed on the quilt. The next regular meeting will be Thursday after noon, March 6, at the home of Mrs. Criteser. It will be month ly contest day, and all members are urged to attend both meetings. BAILEYS ENTERTAIN FRIENDS AT DINNER Mr. and Mrs. Roger Bailey en tertained a small group of friends at their home in Laurelwood Sat urday, February 22 with a turkey dinner. Japanese quince formed an at tractive centerpiece on the dining table and during the evening cards were enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. James Watts, Mr. and Mrs. A. Parr, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Mr. and Mrs. Miss Geraldine Mae Watson, daughter of Mrs. Myrle Dusseau, of Roseburg, and A. E. Watson, of Coquille, was married to Ralph L. Ohman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ohman, of Roseburg, Sun day morning, Feb. 23, at 8:30 o'clock at the Methodist Episco pal church. The ceremony was read by Rev. Charles A. Edwards. The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose a beige suit with an English quilted jacket. Her accessories were Japonica with a beige hat. She wore a cor sage ot white carnations. Mrs. James K. Croxall, of Ban don, sister of the bride, was ma tron of honor. She wore a light blue dress with dark blue acces sories and a corsage of sweet peas. The bridegroom was attend ed by James K. Croxall as best man. Both men wore boutton naires. Miss Bettv Marsters presided at the organ during the ceremony. Guests attending the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. James K. FRIEND IS HONORED AT PARTY MEDFORD. Feb. 27. Mrs. W. G. Friend of Howard district was honored Friday with a dinner partv at the home of her daueh ter, Mrs. Henry Croticher in cele bration of her seventy-first birth day. She was presented with many lovely gifts. Mrs. Ohman graduated from Roseburg senior high school In the class of 1040 and has been employed at Horn's Super Ice Cream shop. Mr. Ohman, a mem ber of the graduating class of 1935 in this city, attended the University of Oregon for three years where he was affiliated with Phi Sigma Kappa social fraternity. He is employed nt the Sun Printing company in this city. resident of Douglas county, he fore moving to Medford four years ago. TURKEY DINNER HONORS ROWLAND COCKERAM ! S. club met Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Walter Single ton. Sewing and visiting were en ioyed during the afternoon and the hostess used bouquets of daf fodils for decoration. DELEGATES REPORT ON DISTRICT CONFERENCE HELD IN EUGENE SUNDAY Several delegates who attend ed the district conference of the Business and Professional Wo men's club In Eugene Sunday, Feb. 23, presented a report on the one day session nt the meet ing held Monday evening, Feb. 24, at the clubhouse. Among those discussing var ious phases ot the conference were Amanda Anderson, Mar garet Johnson, Margaret Wat kins, Ethel Easton and Stella SMncer. It was announced that the next district conference will be held at Medford and the national convention in Los An geles and the state convention In Portland, the latter, May 16, 17 and 18. Margaret Watkins, program chairman, introduced the guests who presented a varied program. Miss Bette Owen'played a piano solo, "Star Dust," and Miss Betty Marsters, accompanied by Miss Owen, sang two solos. "I Am an American" and "In My Garden." Rev. Mr. Smith spoke on the theme, "What Price Peace," which was followed by an In formal discussion. New members taken into the club were Mae Seemes, Viola C. Blessing, Pauline Elskamp and Nellie Baker. Mrs. Joseph Mor com was a guest. Dolma Grobe, chairman of the cheer commit tee, presented a pottery howl to Mrs. Floyd Lewis, a recent bride. Miss Anderson, president of the club, was in charge of the business session which was op ened with the group singing a patriotic hymn. A social hour followed and refreshments were served by the committee. The next meeting will be a St. Pat rick's day party, March 10, at the clubhouse.
