Farmer Co-Ops Of Northwest Helped By Loan System Farmers' marketing and pur chasing cooperatives in Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon borrowed S5.041.OOO from the Spokane Bank for Cooperatives during 19-10, President A. C. Ad ams announced this week. To tal cash repayments on loans during the year was $5,150,000, leaving the bank with an out standing balance on December 31 of SG.GS-i.OOO, compared with $6, 790,000 at the end of 1939. Cooperatives borrowed $2,316, 000 against farm commodities in storage; $2,210,000 for operat ing capital purposes; and S513, 000 to buy or build facilities. Since organization in 1933 the bank has loaned a total of $39, 6S9,000. Earnings In 1940 from loan op erations and income on invest ments totaled $294,000, all of which was added to the bank's earned surplus account, bringing this account up to $1,020,000, rep- resenting total earnings since or ganization, after adjustment for reserves. During 1940 the bank returned $4,500,000 of the $11,000,000 the government had invested in the bank's capital stock. Present capitalization of the bank is S6,500,000 contributed by the gov ernment and $313,500 contributed by borrowing cooperative asso- j-stock in the bank at the time ii obtains Its loan.
