Motschenbaehor presided over the Lions club 6:30 dinner meeting last night at the Ump qua hotel in the absence of the president, Frank Long, and vice president, Thomas Hartflel. Fred A. Hurd, of this city, and Henry llarth, of Los Angeles, were guests of Ihe evening, Willi Mr. Hurd as the principal speak er. Mr. Hurd gave a brief re sume of the canning industry In Oregon, which started in 1903 at Newberg, and is now the third largest industry in the state, with the canning center being at Salem. He also talked about his specialty industry here of can ning turkey and stated that while this is a comparatively new Industry, it had worked out successfully from a commercial standpoint. H. D. Palmer was appointed to represent the club at the meeting of workers on the Infan tile paralysis drive for funds. Plans were made for the Feb ruary 12 meeting, at which time Attorney n. A. Canaday will be guest speaker on "Lincoln's Birthday." The February 19 meeting will be ladies' night, and Judge R. W. Marsters will be guest speaker U. S. Troops Show Their Stamina in Near-Blixzard ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jan. 30. (API Fourth infantry officers had proof today, after an impres sive demonstration in a near blizzard, that United States army troops stationed here could hold to a field schedule under adverse conditions. A unit of 120 men from com pany B braved the severest storm here in many years yesterday on a maneuver five miles Into the wilderness. A heavy snowfall rode a 40-mile wind. The test, under Cant. R. G. Emery, was the i toughest the troops have experi enced since they came norm sev eral months ago. The infantry- men set up a tent village In the snow fields for their noon meal. They were equipped with snow shoes, parkas and other northern equipment. Utilizing tractors, the field ar tillery took their big guns through wilderness snowdrilts to estar lish them in shooting positions. Saturday, Feb. 1 at the courtnouse in Roseburg by Henry Anderson, president. The meeting is to be made particularly interesting through consideration of re ports on pension activities at the state legislature, Mr. An derson states.
