THREE Society and Clubs By LOTUS KNIGHT PORTER UNITED WORKERS CLASS MEETS AT STANTON HOME The United Workers class of the First Christian church Bible school held a very interesting and enjoyable meeting Friday after noon at the home of Mrs. C. G. Stanton on South Pine street with Mrs. Frank Poole, vice-president, in charge. A letter was read from Mrs. Anna Bradway, former Roseburg resident now residing at the Northwestern Christian home at Braverton. Plans were made for the jubi lee dinner, which will be held at the church on January 29th. Mrs. Mable P. Taylor had charge of the devotional program on the topic' of "Service" and read a scripture and poem on that topic. The February meeting was an nounced and will be held at the homo of Mrs. J. M. Miller on Fowler street. Mrs. C. G. Stanton had charge of the entertainment for the af ternoon and Mrs. H. B. Church and Mrs. L. W. Ingels served lovely refreshments. Those enjoying the afternoon with Mis. Stanton included Mrs. Znnna Keller, Mrs. Nellie Burpee, Mrs. C. E. Munson, Mrs. A. J. Crocker, Mrs. J. S. Inscho, Mrs. II. Harvey, Mrs. W. H. Carter, Mrs. L. W. REBEKAH LODGE HAS INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS IOTA SIGMA CLUB HAS ENJOYABLE MEETING The Iota Sigma club met at the home of Mrs. Ehvard Smith Thursday evening with Mrs. W. II. Carter, assisted by Mrs. E. C. Jones, in charge of the devotions. Mrs. Morris H. Roach played two beautiful violin solos, accom panied by Mrs. Max Pennie. Mrs. Hazel 13. I.ytle, Douglas county health nurse, gave a very Inter esting talk on alcohol education and two songs were beautifully rung by Miss Betty Marsters, ac companied by Mrs. Pennie. The business session was in charge of Mrs. Roscoe Marsters wilh topical discussions in charge of Dorothy Hunt, Mrs. M. T. Wire, Mrs. Elwanl Smith. Mrs. Loren Harvey and Mrs. Roscoe Mars ters. Relief Re bcka'h lodge No. 185 of Riddle held installation of officers at their regular meeting Wednes day evening, Gladys Williams, district deputy acted as install ing officer, and was assisted by Lizzie Crow, deputy w a r d e n; Etta Mosthaf deputy secretary; Oma Kellar, deputy treasurer: Maggie Logsdon, deputy chap lain; Josie Pruncr, marshal, and Flora Dean, musician. At the close of the lodge session the members were Invited to the din ing room where the men of the lodge had prepared refreshments of oyster soup, sandwiches, cake and coffee for the crowd. YOUNG IS HOST AT DINNER FOR COUNCIL AND OFFICERS The Young Lutherans league of St. Paul's Lutheran church I met at the home of Rev. and Mrs. W. A. Sylwester Tuesday evening and studied the lesson I from John chapter seven. Those present were Ed Brinkmeyer, j Colleen Elliott, Vera Goetz, Louis Wilson, Mrs. Russell Kaine, Rev. and Mrs. Sylwester. The next meeting will be a topic study session January 28 at the Sylwester home at 1170 Mili tary street at 7:30 o'clock in the evening. BIBLE STUDY CLASS HAS MEETING FRIDAY The first meeting of the new ly organized Bible study class twas held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. George McQueen Friday evening with Rev. W. A. Syl wester, pastor of St. Paul's Luth eran church. In charge. Those present included Rev. Mr. Sylwester, Dr. and Mrs. Mc Queen, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Miller, Richard Hagen, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beeeroft, Miss Agnes Brendon and Miss. Erika Biust. The next meeting will bo held at 7:30 o'clock the evening of January 31 at the McQueen home at 41G South Pine street. EASTERN STAR INSTAI I S NEW OFFICERS FOR 1941 OAKLAND, Jan. 21. One of the most interesting meetings of the year was held Thursday eve ning by Oakland chapter, No. 91, O. E. S., when two new members, Loyal Stearns and Dolmar Mur phy were initiated Into the order anil Mrs. Delmar Murnhv was received by affiliation. Following Initiation, installation ceremony was held. COUNTRY CLUB LADIES TO MEET ON THURSDAY The Ladies of the Roseburg Country club will meet at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the clubhouse for the weekly play of the contract brldne tournament. j Potluck luncheon will be served at 12:30 o'clock and golfing will be enjoyed at 1:30 o'clock. All ladies of the club are cordially invited to be present. Mayor A. J. Young entertained the Roseburg city council and of ficers at a very enjoyable six o'clock dinner at the Hotel Umpqua Civic room Monday evening. Covers were placed for -the host, Mayor Young, W. F. ' The first benefit affair to aid the Infantile paralysis fund, will be a benefit card party to be held at 8 o'clock the evening of Janu ary 30th at the armory. The Federal Employees local has planned a delightful benefit dancing party for the evening of February 1st to be held at the Oriental gardens and the pro ceeds to go to the Infantile pa ralysis fund. STEDFAST BIBLE CLASS TO MEET ON THURSDAY The Stedfast Bible class of the First Presbyterian church Sun day school will hold a social meeting at two o'clock Thurs day afternoon, January 23, at the church parlors. A short busi ness session will be followed by a program, social hour and re freshments. The members at tending are asked to bring cookies to the meeting.
