Louder Alarm Provided For Roseburg Fire Dept. Members of the Roseburg vol unteer fire department residing in or near tne lire hall will have no trouble in the future In hear ing the alarm signal. Installation was completed yesterday of a new, large-sized electric gong, at tached by relay with the alarm telephone. The signal is much louder than has been previously used and can be heard for a dis tance of several blocks. Oregon Youth Lays Escape To Failure to Get Books SACRAMENTO, Jan. 8. (AP) James D. McLarty, 17. who says he walked out of an Oregon reformatory because "thev wouldn't give me books' to com plete my high school education," remained in the county Jail to day awaiting a decision as to v hether he will be sent to a fed eral reformatory. Tank Truck Damaged in Upset; Driver Uninjured An Asbury Transport company oil tank truck and trailer went off the Pacific highway at Kel- ley s Korner early this morning. The truck, traveling in dense fog, went over the high bank, but the driver escaped without injury, The truck was overturned, de molishing the cab and causing considerable damage. Oregon Republican Club's Executives' Meet Dated Chancellor Back on Job After Operation on Eye EUGENE, Jan. 8. (API Chancellor Frederick M. Hunter of the Oregon system of higher education was back at his desk on the University of Oregon cam pus after an absence of several weeks during which he under went an eye operation in New York. The chancellor said his eye sight was "highly improved" as a result. PORTLAND, Jan. 8.
