JOKY 1)1 TORIO Night club owner and Kangsie,-. ARA JOHNSON The mystery Eitl. JOHN DOUOLAS A young finning engineer, in love with Ara. CAPTAIN DAWSON A detec tive who likes to listen. Yesterday; After dl Torio is killed, Dawson rounds ; up the four, questions them. Ara was resting. Alston still asleep. Mrs. 11 e n t h o r n e was telephoning. Douglas had remained in the study. "How do you explain the damp mud on your shoes?" Daw eou asks Douglas. CHAPTER XVIII "Oooh, John!" Ara's appeal ing cry confirmed the truth of Dawson's statement. Hour. us glanc ed down at his shoes. The gray brown mud accused him. "You were in the study, ail right, listening to everything that Joey said to me." Dawson shot at him. "You heard us come out of the passageway, go Into the living room. You stood, right where you're standing now' and when Joey peered around the corner, you kilted him. "Then you ran down the pas sageway to the street, doubled back across the lawn and climbed hi the study window. You ought to know your way along that route pretty well by now, Douglas. It's the second time you're been over it." "Hello, Captain! Sony I took " Dan Klyiin's greeting froze In his throat us he pushed through the front door, stared nt the group gathered at the foot of the stairs. Before he could manage another word, lie caught sight of di Torio'a .body. "Joey?" be asked, softly. "Yes," Dawson replied. "Mur dered. Just like Denthorne. Joey kitRw too much . . ." "He could have been a good guy, If he'd been on the right side of the fence." Flynn eulogized. "I'll miss bringing you In, Joey." "This man Douglas killed him." Dawson Interrupted. "Put hand cuffs on him and don't let him out of your sight. Don't let any of them out of your sight. Take them nil into the living room and keep them there. , . . Krone, wnen did the coroner say he'd be here?" "Captain," Flynn began, "just ns. J ULPP1'"? !n 1 EUl bunch. "I don't care "about, your hunches.". Dawson shouted, his ;.nger mounting. "Clet in that liv ing room nnd stay there. When I have time to listen to your hunches, I'll send for you. Are you going to obey orders, Flynn?" '"Yes, sir." Dawson turned back to Krone nnd di Totio's body. "I want that bullet first. Have it checked ngaiiiHt the one that killed Ben thorne nnd you'll find they're the same. The gun was probably hid den iu Bent home's study nil the time. After you finish with the coroner, have a look n round out side for the revolver. Douglas probably threw it into the- shrub bery." "Maybe he brought it back into the study with him. I'll have a look. Get good pictures of all of this. Krone." He hurried Into the study. There was plenty of evidence ' that Douglas had come In the window. Dawson's eyes picked up n moist outline of a shoe on the carpet by the window and outside he found almost perfect foot prints. Douglas hadn't had the time to cover up his trail as lie had last night. The gnu would he found soon. Paraffin tests would cinch the case. Maybe the Chief would give Daw son a vacation. ... Seemed to be a nice boy this Douglas. . . . And all for an uncle he had never seen. And that girl Ara how deep was she mixed uji in una. uwu iviu, iuu. tiuu a lot of tough breaks. . . . Losing Douglas wus only another one. Dawson looked up, started as Ara entered the study. "I told Flynn" "But I convinced him I had something important to tll you." Lll break that, frisbniun, so help me!" "Really, Captain, I couldn't go far. Officer Krone is at tlie foot of the front stairs, Flynn la hold ing down the living room." "There's the passageway. . , "I had forgotten it so you see, I rreally wanted to see you. You're going to try to pin these murders on John, avert t you? It s a pretty clear case. "You believe, don't you, Cap tain," Ara went on earnestly, "that John came in the passageway, killed Ben thorne, - blocked the door, and went out the window?" "That's about it. And today he reversed the werformance with Joey as the main actor. We've got him " "You're wrong, Captain." This was u new Ara a girl fighting not for hate, but for love. "John Douglas was not in the pnssage- way last night. I know I was there myself!" She hurried on before Dnwson could voice a question. "I left the taxi as soon as it turned the cor ner, ran to the street enrnnce of the passageway. I opened the door nnd was feeling my way nioug tne passage. "I intended to kill Benthorne. my father, nnd have John blamed for it. He was going in the study window. He was to surprise Ben thorne, threnten. him nnd force him to give up my proofs. John also wanted to make Benthorne tell how tie got hold of the mine But John never intended to kill him. 'I've lived on hate so anz. Captain. No one ever loved me, no one ever cared about me. ex cept John. And I was fool enough to try to blame a murder on him. I know better now. ... I love John. He's the first, the only person I've ever loved. I've hated all the others, even those who tried to help a little. You vou can't blame him for this Ben tuore murder!".- Dawson admired this changed Ara. All the pretense, all the hardness, even the smoky, sultry lights in her eyes were gone. In stead he saw a girl in love a girl wno nas round love for the first time. She was willing to do any thing to nave the man she loved 'from the trap she had created. She was weenink quite iihitshfim- edly now, begging for John Doug las ireeoom. . - , But Dawson could not lot, senti ment, nor admiration, nor pity sway his decision.- If ksho . had prooT. . . , "You were in the pas sageway, yon said. Where were you when the shot was fired?" Ara resumed her story, a little more composed. " was nlmost halfway to the hall door. I stood there terrified. Then the v study door slammed. I was afraid some one would come down the passage, so I ran back to the street. I hid In the shadows and in a few mln tttrs I saw Mr. di Torio come out of the passageway. I'm sure it was he. I saw his face when he stopped beneath a street light. "There's your killer. Captain. The man who killed my father is dead." "I don't think bo because " Ten minutes later she rose to leave. "It will be dangerous for you, but I'll try lio see that you are protected," Dawson assured her. "I'm not afraid," she said, eyes shining. "It's a chance I have to take to prove John is innocent." "By spreading the report that you, too, like Joey, actually saw the person who killed Benthorne, we may tempt the killer to strike again. But don't be surprised if Douglas tries to take a shot nt you. . He may have been planning to put Vim 'mi I tin cnnl' tuct no vmi uurn doing to him." "If John shoots at me, T hope be doesn't miss!" she said. And Dawson knew she said it. ns If a prayer. (To becontlnued) Civil Liberties Claim Of Sptague Challenged PORTLAND.
