The air safety board today placed
"basic responsibility" for the loss
of a rutted Air Lines transport
piano off Point Ileyes, Calif., last
November 2!) on the "bad judgment
of the first piiot, Captain Charles
II. Stead, and on two Oakland dis
patchers." Five persons died in
the accident.

gene, Feb. 21. - Scholarships a
mounting to $(11.50 each, which will
cover the cost of major feee for
three terms, will be awarded to 70
students who will attend the Uni
versity of Oregon next year. It was
announced by Karl M. Palleit, reg
istrar. An onimrtunltr to obtain 40 of
the scholarship awards will be open
to students who have never before
attended an institution of higher
learning, it was stated. The re
maining 30 scholarships will be
given to students already register
ed in the university.
The selection of recipients will
be based primarily on need, and
the high school or col leg lute schol
astic record of the applicants. Ap
plication forms, which have beeu
sent out to high school principals
throughout the state, must be re
turned by April 1.
The awards will be announced
in May. Dr. Fallen said. Applica
tions from graduate and undergrad
uate students now attending the
university will be due June 1.
Anyone who has graduated from
high school and who has not at
tended any other college will be
eligible to apply for one of the 40
non-student nxvards available.
